RM10 Durians – Buah masih baikkah? (Is the fruit good?) – A Lesson in Life
I went to the wet market rather late during the weekend a fortnight ago. Most of the vendors there are already packing up their stuff and were ready to go back home. One durian vendors saw me and offered to sell all the leftover durians for RM10. I was skeptical at first but he managed to convinced me when he said, “80% sek tak” (80% good).
Somehow it seems like a good bargain and since he is a regular vendor in the Kepong Baru Wet market, I bought all the durians from him for RM10.
I immediately opened up the fruits when I reached home. The flesh of the durians is very nice although the outer skin of the fruit were a bit damaged, which I think must have been sustained when they fall from the tree high above the ground. At last I ended up with three containers full of durians. I separated one half ripe fruit into a container. So, one half ripe small containers of durians out of three containers is not too bad. True to the vendor word, 80 % sek tak! (80% good)
So the customers did not pick up these durians because they have damaged and ugly outer skin. But deep inside the damaged and ugly skin lays nice succulent creamy flesh.
Sometime in life we tend to pass judgment based on someone appearance. A good looking and smooth talker might not have good intention inside them but they can be very popular among the peers. It is always the case when help is needed, someone quiet and simple would be the one that extend a helping hand eagerly! True?
I once bought a pack of durians abotu RM10 or so and it turned out to be a mistake. No good. Felt so cheated.
ReplyDeleteAt least yours 80% edible.
Wow! 8 durians for RM10, so cheap! They look good to me. As long as no worms inside then it is ok.
ReplyDeleteSo many, how do you manage to eat them all?
I went for groceries last week and also smelt some lovely scent of durians around. They were selling at A$4.00 per kilo. Consider to be cheap.
hhaahahahh wat a good bargain and you were lucky....really good to go with tomyam prawn? i have yet to try eating with rice like they do in kelantan....feel so weird...if wif nasi pulut then still ok..but rice????????? :)
ReplyDeleteMei Teng : Many vendors sell cheap pack of durians but most of the time they are not good. It is better to buy from a regular vendor.
ReplyDeleteAi Shiang : I put some in the freezer and take out a little at the time whenever I want to eat them....taste like ice cream...he he he!
Wow, A$4 per kilo...but I guess the freight cost is high so they have to mark up to this price. KL can get very good durians at RM4 per kilo...now some clone durians dropped to RM2 per kilo.
Manglish : Somehow I like the taste of creamy durians and sour tomyam. My taste buds go haywire already....ha ha ha!
ReplyDeleteWow...good buy! U really know where to grab these good bargains. ehehe....And agree....don't judge the look by its cover.
ReplyDeletemNhL : I guess I was just lucky, was in front of the stall when the owner shouted RM10 for all....LOL!
ReplyDeletePete what about "tomrian" [tomyam+durian] lagi haywire. 8 biji for RM10, soli my mom told me not to eat too much fish eggs said no good for math dunno how to count woh!!! True, never judge a book by its cover, just like you slim and skinny but can wallop 8 (less 20%) durians and with rice??? Ho liao..
ReplyDeleteGood deal man!
ReplyDeleteDurians! My throat! I haven't have durians for a very long time! I do miss it.. but I never eat much. haha.
ReplyDeletehey Pete, now durian season again? in that case, i must go look n buy.. :) 10rm is so cheap even for leftovers.. i dont mind buying too and eating them with rice is so so so so yummmylicious!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so true Pete, like what the old saying goes: Do not judge a book by it's cover.
ReplyDeleteBut honestly, I haven't tried durians, I guess you already know why. It's the smell LOL now I am judging durian. No...but I am not under estimating it. Durian is one of the most expensive fruits here in the Philippines, and it's taste good according to my Dad. I prefer eating the candied durians.
AL
I love your life lesson today, it's so true that we judge by appearances too much, I know better but still do it. Also interesting to see the Durian flesh.
ReplyDeleteBro Cheah : Ha ha, Tomrian...new dish!
ReplyDeleteMLTC : Agree, quite a good deal!
Ladyviral : But once you start...hard to stop!
Claire : Here almost at the peak already....price now very low!
AL : Hah, the smell is really very pungent...but flesh very creamy.
Christine : Somehow we are all human beings with some weaknesses. But then if we are aware of it I think it is ok, at least it will be under control. The durian flesh creamy and sweet. The smell is very strong.
Before I retire from work, one of the supplier belanja me to their durian party and that night was my 1st time in my life eating so many difference type of durians, I think got about 20 over types, from D26 D8, Dxx, until the top quality "Raja Kunyit", I can't remember all the names, too many..So I have no regret as I have tried the most expensive durian, hahaha...
ReplyDeleteSonia : Wow, it would be great to try so many types of durians at once....can compare the taste! Got Dxx one meh? ha ha ha!
ReplyDeleteya..don't judge a book by its cover..
ReplyDeleteOMG!!! SO NICEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

Wenn : Agree with you!
ReplyDeleteMedie007 : Thks for dropping by my blog. Now durian in season....almost peak...can get good at a good price!
I will never eat durian if they are not cold and frozen up in the freezer. LOL...
ReplyDeleteYou're so, so right. Never judge a book by it's cover, or rather, in your case, never judge a durian by it's skin. LOL...looks can be deceiving most of the time, and yeah, usually when you are in trouble, the most unlikely people will come and extend their helping hands.
Back to your durian... I never knew that durian can be eat with rice like that. Looks kinky!
Wah! So cheap!!!...I had durian two days agao...and now still sore throat! LOL!!! And suddenly so philosophical! Ya...never judge from looks! Like me...so big, fat and ugly...but actually so nice hor??? Hahahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteCleff : Ha ha ha, 'kinky' way of eating durians with rice....but taste good!
ReplyDeleteSTP : Wah, how many did you eat?
STP might be very chubby, but deep down inside...have a soft heart!

ReplyDeletexin : ha ha, me and my crazy experiment with food! LOL!
