Ghost Story – I Want Milk! (Real Story in Kedah, Malaysia)

My friend, Amy shared this story about her cousin sister in Kedah who is in her late fifties now. With the moon near to its’ midnight position up in the clear night sky, they hastily ascend the hill slope of the Chinese cemetery. Ah Cheng (not her real name), a teenager was the only girl member of the group and their purpose is to seek lucky numbers from the spirit that dwells in one of the graves. They stopped by a small grave and when Ah Cheng shined her torch light at the tombstone, she saw a picture of a woman. The rest of the men in their group light up some joss sticks and some of them were poking the grave with bamboo stick, a ritual to summon the spirit that lies within. All of a sudden, Ah Cheng and the men heard the voice of a woman and a child crying. Ah Cheng told the woman that they wanted to ask for lucky numbers from her to bet on the next draw. The woman agreed to help them but she said that she needed someone to hold her baby so that she could go to the "datuk" down the hill to request for the numbers. She requested Ah Cheng to stretch out her arms. Ah Cheng did so, and suddenly she felt something heavy and icy cold placed on her outstretched arms. The woman requested the men to pray at the ‘datuk’ shrine down at the hill slope and she will help them to speak to the ‘datuk’ spirit to give them the lucky numbers. As soon as the men left, the baby began to cry. Ah Cheng panicked. Cold sweat ran down her forehead. She could not retract or move her outstretched arms at all. She noticed some movement in the bushes nearby. Out of the sudden, an old man appeared and asked her what she is doing in the cemetery in the middle of night. Ah Cheng explained everything to the old man. He is actually the caretaker of the cemetery and he was aroused from his sleep by the commotion caused by the lucky numbers seeking party! The men returned. The woman told Ah Cheng that her baby is hungry and she wanted them to buy her some milk. Ah Cheng told the men and caretaker what the women wanted. The caretaker advised Ah Cheng to tell the women that they will bring some milk for her baby when the number strike first price. The lady agreed and she told Ah Cheng that when she takes her bath the next day, the lucky number will appear on her arm. Ah Cheng reached home and quietly went to bed. The next morning, Ah Cheng’s mother learned from her neighbors of her little adventure. Her mother was so furious the she caned Ah Cheng to teach her a lesson because her life could possibly be taken away by the female spirit if the spirit was not appeased. Her body was full of cane marks as the result of the beating. Later, when she was taking her bath, a four digit number really appeared on her upper arm. She sneaked out of her house to tell her friends and the graveyard caretaker the number. She bet RM1.00 on the number. The number won first prize! They went back to the cemetery immediately with tins of milk to offer to the spirits. They learned that the caretaker won a lot of money; probably he will be retiring from being a caretaker soon. In spite of being badly beaten, Ah Cheng gave all the money she won to her mother! From that day onwards, Ah Cheng did not dare to participate in such paranormal activities any more. Roast piglet meat...................................................Steamed fish. The visit to Cu Chi tunnel was indeed eye opening. The NFL Guerrillas dug these tunnels to hide during the Vietnam war. By the time the American troops retreat, the total tunnel network length was more than 200km and some even passed through below the American base. The tunnels are dug using basic hand tools during the night. When the American tried to flush them out using water, the water just flowed to the Saigon River. The tunnel leading to the river is their escape route. The NFL guerrillas managed to lead a successful campaigned against the more technologically advance enemy. I crawled throught one of the network of tunnels, it was so dark and creepy. Life must have been very hard inside here. One of the hideout. Demonstration by the guide. I tried it, real dark inside! Events – Chinese Hungry Ghost Festival (Kotai, Tortoise Buns, Chinese Opera)

When I was a child, I always look forward to the Hungry Ghost Festival. I love to watch the Chinese Opera although most of the time, I don’t quite understand the old style of Chinese dialect the performers used. My mom would allow me to stay up late until 12 midnight to watch the shows. I still miss the popiah(spring roll), lobak(spiced meat), leng chi kang(sweet dessert) and kueh kark(fried radish cake) from the temporary stalls that were set up during the festival. The temple near my old house in my hometown will give away small flags which I will collect and use the bamboo to make kites. Those were the good old days. This is a part of our rich Chinese culture that I think we should pass on and explain to the younger generation. So, I brought my daughter to one of these festivals recently and below are some of the pictures she took. Flags with sponsors company name......................Cute tortoise buns, some piggy back riding! A sea of tortoise buns.............................................Some newly hatched baby tortoise! And................... The sexy Kotai(concert)!

Food – Gembira Restaurant Taman Megah, PJ (Braised Pork, Shark Fin Soup, Drunken Prawn, Assam Fish) (Non Halal)

Choy Heong Tofu.....................................................Sharkfin Soup Drunken Prawns....................................................Four Types Vegetables Assam Fish..............................................................Braised Pork Belacan Kangkong..................................................Gembira Restaurant My brother and his family were in town recently with to attend his post graduation ceremony. So, off we went to have a little family gathering by having dinner together. Gembira Restaurant is located in Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya opposite the Ming Tien Food court. The hawker stall operates here in the morning and Chan Kee (used to be in SS3) takes over at night. The owner recommended drunken tiger prawn which is very fresh and also shark fin soup; both dishes are on the Restaurant special offer menu. The Assam Fish is full of flavours and real tasty. I like the four types of vegetable combination which consist of petai, eggplant, long beans and lady fingers, fried to perfection with chili. The braised pork texture is soft and the smell of star anise is wonderful. The Choy Heong Tofu is a bit spicy, so it might not be suitable if you are thinking of ordering this dish for children. The homemade tofu is simply delicious. The sambal kangkung (water convolvulus) portion is rather generous. We ordered two bowls of shark fin soup for the kids but I did not get a chance to taste it, as my son finished all of it before I can do so. The total bill plus all the drinks came out to be RM131.00, very reasonable for six main dishes (for 9 adults and two children) and two bowls of shark fin soup! Address: Gembira Restaurant, Jalan SS24/2, Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya. Opening Hours: Dinner only (morning, hawker stalls) GPS Latitude 3° 6'50.42"N, Longitude 101°36'44.24"E Map to Taman Megah, Petaling Jaya

Jokes – Apek (Chinese Uncle) Buying A Volkswagen Beetle Car

Since I still cannot get over my wife disagreement to buy the Mazda MX-5 and many of you are fans of the beetle, here is a joke about Volkswagen beetle. An Apek(Chinese Uncle) went to a second hand car showroom to buy a car.

Salesman: Selamat pagi(Good morning) Apek. Kamu mahu beli kereta yang mana?(Which car do you want to buy?)

Apek : Wa segan lah! (Chinese pronunciation of Volkswagen, but in Malay Language it sounds like, I am shy)

Salesman: Aiyo!, Apek nak beli kereta apa mahu segan-segan? Tak payah malu. (You just want to buy a car, why are you shy about it?)

Apek : Saya tak mallu lorrrr. Saya mahu beli kereta Wa Segan lah! ( I want to buy a Volkswagen car)

Salesman: Ohhhh…..Volkswagen beetle. The Apek then went on to choose a Volkswagen beetle, paid cash and drove the car home. But the car broke down when he reached the highway. So he stopped by the emergency lane and opened the front bonnet of the car and this is what he said.

Apek : Celaka, dia jual saya kereta tak ada engine punya! (Shit, he sold me a car without engine!)

Note: Unlike other cars, the Volkswagen engine is in the back trunk.
