Tong's Kitchen, USJ 19 , A Friendly Neighbourhood Restaurant

This is my second visit to Tong's Kitchen in USJ19 Digital Mall. This restaurant is a popular neighbour hood restaurant and you will notice that most of the patrons know each other so is the owner of the restaurant. I forgot to blog about it during my first visit here. I can see that this restaurant has a good crowd nowadays. There are many families dining in here when I was there for dinner. In fact the place was packed with diners and all the tables were taken.

For a start, we tried out this unique dish, the Volcano Tofu. As per its' namesake, you can actually see the smoke coming out from the tofu! The sauce is nice and a little spicy but I think it would taste nicer if the tofu used is softer type.

The kids love calamari and for a change we ordered fried squid rings with salted eggs in flour batter. You can't go wrong with salted eggs.....! This dish taste really nice! yum yum!

This is the Mongolian Fried Chicken....opppps, sensitive 'word'! ha ha ha! The chicken is fried until crispy and topped with thick flavourful gravy. Red wine vinegar gave the sauce the reddish colour. Alternatively, the red wine vinegar can be substituted with Dry Sherry. The Mongolian Chicken is delicious!
All the dishes that we ate!
I forgot how much we paid for the meal......next time must write it down liao! Sign of getting old......sigh! LOL!

Pormtip Thai Restaurant, USJ 19 Digital Mall

Sawadee Khrap. Sabai Dee Mai? (Greetings, how are you?) My sister in law gave my family a treat this restaurant which is located in the USJ 19 Digital Mall, Subang Jaya. The menu has a good choice of Thai food but unfortunately I could not find my favorite Mieng Kam, a Thai starter dish using Daun Kadok (wild betel leave, pointed pepper, sua lau heoh), with peanut, chilly padi, toasted coconut, ginger, shallots, dried shrimps, lime and sweetened fish sauce. So, we just settled for Somtam (unripe papaya saldd). The total bill for 2 Tomyam Kung (1 big, 1 small), Basil Chicken (small), Choy Tam(small), Kangkung (small), Sweet and Sour tilapia (large), Claypot Tofu (large), Somtam (small), 2 Fried Rice (no photo) and Drinks came up to be RM180. Here are the food we ate. Cone shaped rice! STP, I know what you are thinking, ha ha ha!

The Tom Yam Kung is very spicy, sourish and full of flavours. I like it very much.. This is a good way to whet my appetite and eat more rice. I drank the soup till the last drop! LOL!

Fried Kangkong (water convolvulus) Belachan (fermented shrimp paste). Basil Chicken and Fried Choy Tam (Baby Brussels Sprouts). The Basil chicken is tasty and have very nice basil leaves aroma. My wife loves this dish. The fried choy tam has a wonderful wok hei (wok burn smell) aroma. There is nothing to shout about the Belachan Kangkong.

We decided to go for sweet and sour tilapia (St Peter’s fish), so that the kids can also eat it because it is not spicy. The flesh is fried until crispy and taste real good with the sweet sour sauce!......left just the head!

Som Tam (unripe papaya salad) with funny tasting lime juice drink with rose flavour! The som tam so so (ok) only, but I like the fresh crunchy long beans!

The kids need to have something that is not spicy, so we ordered claypot tofu again! No comment, Mai Phean Rai (never mind), just makan (eat)! LOL!

No photo for the fried rice. Forgot lah..... La Gon. Lau Jer Gun. Kap Khun Khap. (Goodbye, See you again, Thank you) Address and Map to Promtip Thai Restaurant, USJ 19 Digital Mall, Persiaran Kewajipan, Subang Jaya

Assam Laksa at Nanking Restaurant (Kedai Kopi), USJ Subang Jaya

This is my favourite haunt for assam laksa whenever I am around this area during tea time. Many restaurants would not operate during this hour and sometimes it is hard to find things to eat during tea time. Nanking Restaurant is located in the heart of busy Taipan commercial area and it is hard to find parking here during the weekdays. So, it is better to come here during the weekends. I would prefer the assam laksa without the har ko (prawn paste) because it make it sweet and change the laksa taste. Anyway, I have been eating the laksa in Nanking Restaurant for quite some time already and each time it manages to satisfy my cravings for this sour and spicy hawker food till my next trip back to Penang. The laksa gravy is not very thick but if eaten without the har ko, the sourness is just nice. Ask for more chilli padi if you like it spicy. After having our fill of Assam Laksa, I bought some yau char kwai from the stall at the back lane directly behind Nanking. Kueh Teow Theng and Penang Curry Mee for Breakfast at Le Kwang Restaurant, USJ Subang Jaya

This is one of my favourite place for a good bowl of Penang style Curry Mee (noodles) and Penang Kuih Teow soup (Keow Teow Theng). I would drop by this place whenever I have appointments in USJ area. There is a Chap fan (economy rice) stall here that serves nice dishes and porridge. Overall, the food from the hawker stalls in Le Kwang is quite good. Le Kwang is normally packed with customers most of the time and it is quite hard to get a seat during peak hours. I was in Subang Jaya early last Saturday and decided to drop by Le Kwang for breakfast. I ordered the Curry mee and Kueh Teow Soup. The curry mee was served with a dollop of aromatic and spicy chilly paste. I added all the chilly paste to the soup for extra kick and flavours. The tofu pok (fried tofu) soaked up all the savoury and creamy curry mee soup which burst in you mouth as you put it in! Mmmmmm, nice and tasty. The kueh teow soup (keuh teow theng) is quite close to the one that you find in Penang. It is served with lettuce, spring onions, fish cake, fish ball and pieces of pork. Ask for extra crispy pork lard which would make the bowl of keuh teow soup tastier by ten fold! Ha ha ha, after that better do more exercise! LOL! After a nice hearty breakfast, I washed down all of the nice food with a cup of my favourite coffee!

Sisters Char Kueh Teow (Fried Flat Rice Vermicelli), USJ 16/2G Subang Jaya, Selangor

A friend of mine told me about this 10 months old restaurant. It is not related to the famous Penang sisters char kueh teow but the lady boss, Mrs Cheng told me that she is from Penang. Before venturing into this restaurant business, she was actually running a minimarket in the same location. She decided to call it quit when low price SpeedMart open just a few shoplots away. I went to Subang Jaya to meet up with a client last week and I decided to look for this restaurant. I was not very sure of the actual location because my friend just gave me a rough direction to the place. After a few turns around the housing area, I found Sisters Char Kueh Teow coffee shop (kopitiam). It is located next to Ah Pek Kopitiam. I went in the restaurant and immediately ordered a plate of char kueh teow (RM4.00) with a glass of kopi peng (iced coffee with milk, RM1.50). The char kueh teow is a little bit more of a cross between Penang style and KL wet type. It tastes quite good, actually! The wok hei (hot wok fire smell) gave it an extra flavour. This restaurant also serves Penang Curry Mee, Chee Cheong Fun, Kueh Teow soup, Yong Tau Foo, wantan mee, fried rice and Penang Style Hokkian Char.

F4 Subang Jaya Fish Head Restaurant

“A fish head restaurant in the middle of a light industrial estate? “, I asked my brother in law when he told me about this place. F4 (nothing to do with the famous singing group, F4) Fish Head Restaurant is located near Giant Hypermarket in Subang Jaya. The lot that this restaurant occupies is rather large and it can accommodate at least 60 to 70 tables. The dishes that we had in this restaurant are Fish Head Nyonya Style, Butter Prawn, Steam Eggs, Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves, Pork Belly with Salted Fish and Deep Fried Squid. The type of fish head that is popular here is freshwater carp. Although the carp is full of ‘Y’ shaped bones, the flesh has fine texture. The Nyonya Style sauce is tasty with right combination of sour and sweet taste. The aromatic and spicy sauce of this dish really increases my appetite, so I asked for ‘kar faan’ (add more rice). LOL The Butter Prawn is good too, served with generous amount of crispy butter fried egg white. Large white skin type sea prawns are used in this dish. My kids love the crispy buttered egg white, while I got to eat all the prawns, he he he! Century eggs are added into the steamed eggs dish. It has smooth texture, just like the Japanese Chawan Mushi. The century eggs gave it an extra kick! The stir fried sweet potato leaves dish is normal but the leaves are fresh, young and crunchy. The Pork Belly and Salted Fish (Ham Yee Fah Lam Poh) is full of taste. This is my son favourite dish. The dried chilly and salted fish combination gave this dish a unique flavour, yummy! The squid they used for deep frying with flour was rather large but the meat was surprisingly tender. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this dish goes well with the Thai Style chilly sauce. Thumbs up for the Fried Squid with Flour. All together the total bill plus drinks for 5 adults, 2 children and 2 toddlers came up to RM104. F4 Fish Head Restaurant is a reasonable place to have a family meal. Hawker Food – Penang Lrg Selamat Char Kueh Teow in USJ 14, Subang Jaya, Selangor

My favourite CKT. Arrrrg, I am putting on weight. Need to sign up for weight loss program. LOL. Lam Hing Leong Restaurant Whenever I crave for Penang Char Kueh Teow, I would drop by in Lam Hing Leong Restaurant in USJ14, Subang Jaya, to eat the famous Penang Lorong Selamat Char Kueh Teow there. The Kueh Teow is fried to perfection and topped with crispy fried lard, the way I like it. Drooling already……….need to go back to get my Char Kueh Teow shot! LOL. The stall is run by a husband and wife team. The wife does the frying of the Kueh Teow. You should observe how Uncle Jimmy adds pepper and crispy fried lard on to a plate of Fried Kueh Teow……. ada style (Got style)! There is another stall in this restaurant that sells Penang White Curry Mee and Penang Kueh Teow Soup. Try it out!

Hawker Food(NV) – Restaurant Meisek, USJ 14, Subang Jaya- Non Halal

1) Restaurant Meisek.............................................. 2) Har Mee (Penang Prawn Mee) 1) Pork Intestine Porridge...................................... 2) Duck Rice It was Sunday morning and I was craving for Penang Char Kueh Teow, so off we went all the way to Subang Jaya to take the famous Penang Lorong Selamat Fried Kueh Teow. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed. Wow, closed on Sunday, business must be real good! Since we were already in USJ, we hopped over to Restaurant Meisek in USJ 14, located at the shop lots just next to Sekolah Wawasan. As usual, my son ordered his favourite, Penang Hokkien Mee(Prawn Mee). Still on his quest to find one that can beat the Bdr Sri Damansara Hokkien Mee featured in my post dated 16th June 08. The gravy is more of the plain type but it is rich is taste. Priced at RM3.80 for a small bowl, it comes with a generous portion of fried shallots, prawns, sliced pork and kangkong (water convolvulus). The Hokkien Mee passed my test. My daughter wanted to eat duck rice, and I ordered a plate for her from the Lian Kee Chicken Rice Stall. I saw only one roast duck at the stall as their main dish is chicken rice. The gravy for the duck is good and the meat is tender. The aroma and texture of the rice is nice. It cost RM4.30 a plate, worth the money. My wife suggested that we try the Hong Kong Porridge as she saw many customers were having porridge for their breakfast. We ordered fried intestine porridge (Chee Chap Choke), my favourite. Priced at RM3.80 a bowl; it is served with crispy fried pig intestine, some other internal parts, green onions and ginger. Very tasty…….mmmmmm.
