Here Birdie, Birdie. Feeding Time! Common Millet (Panicum miliaceum) and Red Turtle Neck (Streptopelia tranquebarica)

Heyyyyyy, this is not a post about how to cook common millets or simply known as bird seeds! Ever since I started feeding these wild birds, they will wait for me at my house gate every late afternoon. They seem to know the time that I will come out and feed them. I bought this packet of common millet from the pet shop at RM1.80. Common house sparrows (Scientific name, Passer domesticus) love this type of bird seeds. The number of bird that turned up during feeding time seems to increase day by day. Even the red turtle dove (Burung terkukur, scientific name Streptopelia tranquebarica) that used to nest at the pillar in my porch is coming to feed on these seeds. These are great song birds and are very much sought after especially in Indonesia. Well, I guess it is better to feed these wild birds rather that putting them in cages, so that they can still roam and fly freely. Opps, here comes Toby the cat........watch out birds!

My neighbour's cute cat!

Asian Koel, Black Glossy Starling and Black Naped Oriole Feasting on My Ripe Papayas

I like to leave some ripe papayas on the tree at my house and watch many types of bird feasting on it. One of the common visitors is the Asian Koel (Eudynamys Scolopacea) which belongs to the Cuckoo family. The Asian Koel (Eudynamys Scolopacea) The Female Asian Koel feasting on my ripe papaya The picture above shows a female Koel. Female Koel has brown feathers with white spots and the male Koel is iridescent blue black. The female koel will lay her eggs in other birds nest; especially crows nest and let the surrogate mother raise her young. The male Koel will find a suitable crows’ nest and then it will start his mating call to attract the female Koel. They will mate and then the female Koel will lay the eggs in the crows’ nest. Clever bird! Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis) Matured bird is glossy black in colour and immature ones have white spots on the feathers. Then came the yellow, Black Naped Oriole......... Albino Common Myna Bird – One in a Million!

Albino Myna....................................................Always seen together with other normal mynas Sorry the pictures are not clear. I have to chase after the little fella to get a good shot! Malaysian common myna which is the member of the starling species is brown in colour. I came across this albino myna bird a couple of times in the park that I use to frequent. Albino myna is very rare. Myna bird is a very adaptable species and it is a native bird of South East Asia. I used to have 2 cute myna birds as pets when I was a kid. They follow me everywhere. Myna birds are favourite pets because of their speaking abiliities. It is very interesting to watch this albino myna bird mingling around with other normal mynas in searching for food in the park. Sometimes, I wonder why these normal myna birds can life together with this odd albino myna bird peacefully, but in many parts of the world, people are still fighting each other because of the difference in skin colour. It is also very interesting to note that mynas stay with one single mate for life!
