Happy Nunchaku New Year 2011

Pete with the metal nunchaku, free style techniques; ouch ouch ouch........aiya, whole body blue black liao! ha ha ha! Still need lots of practice! LOL!

The nunchak or nunchaku (ヌンチャク) which was made famous by Bruce Lee in his movies is actually an old Japanese Okinawan Martial art weapon. Nunchaku is made from two sections of wood or metal rods held together by a chain. Traditional nunchaks are made from hard wood but you can find metal ones like above. It is not an easy weapon to master because it can bounce back whenever you hit your opponent. Therefore the person handling this weapon might hurt his own self. However, once you mastered the nunchaku techniques; it flows smoothly around your body just like the continuously flowing water of a stream. 2010 has been a challenging and tough year for me. I have encountered many obstacles along the way, at times was very tired and felt really worn out. However, we have to be like the nunchaku; sweeping away all the obstacles and fight on till the end.

Wishing everyone a smooth flowing and healthy 2011 Nunchaku New Year!

The Legend of Bruce Lee – Episode 50 (Final) – Jeet Kune Do, A Great Martial Art Philosophy

I have been following Bruce Lee The Legend series in TV8 for the last few weeks. The show ended today as most of us already know with the death of the great martial artist. Danny Chan Kwok Kuen and Michelle Lang, the stars of the show, were excellent in playing the part of Bruce Lee and Linda Lee Cadwell. Bruce Lee incorporated all the useful moves of a few type of martial arts like Wushu, Jujitsu, Karate, Teakwando, boxing and many others to form his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do. Every moves in any type of martial art have its’ own pro and con. Any move that is redundant or not practical is removed by Bruce to form this new type of martial art. This concept enables Bruce to counter attack and react very fast against his opponent. Many of his opponents that think the martial they practice are the best and look down on other martial art lost to him. This great philosophy teaches us one thing, in real life, no matter what you believe in or practice, no one is always wrong or always right. Try to follow whatever that is right and you think is good. Don’t be too proud of what you believe in or think that you are always right! Approach everything you encounter in life with an open mind.
This is...........errrrr, Bruce Lim, yours truly Ha Ha!........ picture taken by my daughter!

Bruce Lee The Legend Series

I am a great fan of Bruce Lee and have been following The Legend of Bruce Lee series for the last few weeks. I have read a few of Bruce Lee’s book and I was really excited when I came to know that TV8 is showing the series. The main actor Danny Chan Kwok Kuen (of Shaolin Soccer fame) bears a striking resemblance to the late martial art legend, Bruce Lee. Michelle Lang stars as Linda Lee Cadwell. The 50 episode series is produced by China Central Television (CCTV). Bruce’s daughter Shannon Lee is the executive producer. Bruce has good martial skill because he learned all the good moves from many types of martial art and combined all of it together to create a new martial art, which he named it as Jeet Kune Do. Yaaaaaaaa......eeeeeeee.....aheeeeee. I’m going to the gym for practice! Bruce Lee The Legend Trailer Related post : http://peteformation.blogspot.com/2008/07/bruce-lee-35th-death-anniversary.html

Bruce Lee 35th Death Anniversary – Remembering a Great Martial Artist

Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong on 20th July 1973. He was 32 year old then and was at the peak of his career. Bruce was widely known as a very popular martial artist and actor. His father sent him to learn Wing Chun from Master Yip Man at a very young age. Lee perfected traditional fighting style and created Jeet Kune Do. Normally, when someone is attacked, he will block (defense) and look for opportunity to counter attack. In offensive defense, the technique involves combination of offense and defense. By doing this we can keep the opponent continually on the defensive because all attack are countered off with offense. For example, when an opponent try to punch you, one of his legs will advance towards you. When he is halfway through you can use your leg to attack his shin and knee. Using your leg to attack will also give you the advantage of reach which is longer than the opponent arm reach. Bruce one inch punch was known to send a 200lbs man flying back 15 feet. He was also well known for being able to perform exceptional physical feat like one-hand push-ups using only his thumb and index finger and breaking a punching bag with a sidekick. Among Bruce’s famous quote, the one that I like most is ‘Be self aware rather than a repetitious robot.’ We can apply this quote in martial art training and also our daily life. 'Woh oh oh oh, everybody loves Kung Fu fighting, hah uh….'I will be humming this popular song all day long. Can’t wait to drop by the gym in the morning! LOL These are the books about Bruce that I have read.
