Happy Nunchaku New Year 2011

Pete with the metal nunchaku, free style techniques; ouch ouch ouch........aiya, whole body blue black liao! ha ha ha! Still need lots of practice! LOL!

The nunchak or nunchaku (ヌンチャク) which was made famous by Bruce Lee in his movies is actually an old Japanese Okinawan Martial art weapon. Nunchaku is made from two sections of wood or metal rods held together by a chain. Traditional nunchaks are made from hard wood but you can find metal ones like above. It is not an easy weapon to master because it can bounce back whenever you hit your opponent. Therefore the person handling this weapon might hurt his own self. However, once you mastered the nunchaku techniques; it flows smoothly around your body just like the continuously flowing water of a stream. 2010 has been a challenging and tough year for me. I have encountered many obstacles along the way, at times was very tired and felt really worn out. However, we have to be like the nunchaku; sweeping away all the obstacles and fight on till the end.

Wishing everyone a smooth flowing and healthy 2011 Nunchaku New Year!

Bruce Lee My Brother - A Movie Outing with My Daughter

My daughter looking at the movie poster!

My daugther is also a fan of Bruce Lee, just like me. So when the new movie Bruce Lee My Brother started showing in the local cinema, she bugs me to bring her to watch it! Unlike the TV series Bruce Lee The Legend, this movie focus on his early childhood and his life growing up in Hong Kong. So, action fans won't get to see so much of fight scenes and moves. Aarif Rahman is the main actor acting as Bruce Lee and veteran actor Tony Leung Ka Fai. Sweet and sexy Christy Chung acts as Grace, Bruce's mother. This is a very entertaining movie with some light and funny moments. It also covers, Bruce's early exposure to the acting world and film making in Hong Kong. Some of old veterans actors featured are Bo Bo Fung (the famous child actress), Shek Kin (the famous nemesis of Wong Fei Hung) and Lam Ching Por. The cha cha contest part is rather entertaining. Bruce Lee entered the contest with his younger brother and they won. It is so cute to see both of them dancing cha cha cha as partners!

This movies reminds me about some of the events that happened to me during my childhood. LOL!

Wing Chun Ip Man 2 Exhibition at 1U -Toddler Day Out

Mommy said I am too active and was disturbing my kor kor (elder brother) and che che (elder sister) studying during the weekend. Daddy is a fan of Martial Arts, so I get to tag along with him when he went over to IU (One Utama) shopping complex to see a Wing Chun ( 詠春) demonstration in conjuction with the release of Ip Man 2 (Bruce Lee's sifu) movie.

Wah, the lion head so big, how to perform lion dance with such a big heavy head! Must attain a high level of kung fu before can carry this lion head!

Wing Chun demonstration by local students. Wah, like dancing Cha Cha Cha lah! ha ha ha

Opps, a lethal strike.......ouch!

A Wing Chun Master from Hong Kong demonstrating the famous Chi Sao (黐手, not chi sau the pork leg that we eat ah!) or better known in English as "sticking hands" techniques.

Aiiiik, got Muk Yan Jong(木人樁, wooden dummy) on the stage. I wanna give it a try!

Opps, I am too short. Can only reach the wooden leg.

Never mind lah, I can climb also, like the che che (elder sister) next to me! LOL!

Then, we met up with 3 Kor (3rd Auntie) for dim sum lunch at Canton I.........to be continued...

The Legend of Bruce Lee – Episode 50 (Final) – Jeet Kune Do, A Great Martial Art Philosophy

I have been following Bruce Lee The Legend series in TV8 for the last few weeks. The show ended today as most of us already know with the death of the great martial artist. Danny Chan Kwok Kuen and Michelle Lang, the stars of the show, were excellent in playing the part of Bruce Lee and Linda Lee Cadwell. Bruce Lee incorporated all the useful moves of a few type of martial arts like Wushu, Jujitsu, Karate, Teakwando, boxing and many others to form his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do. Every moves in any type of martial art have its’ own pro and con. Any move that is redundant or not practical is removed by Bruce to form this new type of martial art. This concept enables Bruce to counter attack and react very fast against his opponent. Many of his opponents that think the martial they practice are the best and look down on other martial art lost to him. This great philosophy teaches us one thing, in real life, no matter what you believe in or practice, no one is always wrong or always right. Try to follow whatever that is right and you think is good. Don’t be too proud of what you believe in or think that you are always right! Approach everything you encounter in life with an open mind.
This is...........errrrr, Bruce Lim, yours truly Ha Ha!........ picture taken by my daughter!

Bruce Lee The Legend Series

I am a great fan of Bruce Lee and have been following The Legend of Bruce Lee series for the last few weeks. I have read a few of Bruce Lee’s book and I was really excited when I came to know that TV8 is showing the series. The main actor Danny Chan Kwok Kuen (of Shaolin Soccer fame) bears a striking resemblance to the late martial art legend, Bruce Lee. Michelle Lang stars as Linda Lee Cadwell. The 50 episode series is produced by China Central Television (CCTV). Bruce’s daughter Shannon Lee is the executive producer. Bruce has good martial skill because he learned all the good moves from many types of martial art and combined all of it together to create a new martial art, which he named it as Jeet Kune Do. Yaaaaaaaa......eeeeeeee.....aheeeeee. I’m going to the gym for practice! Bruce Lee The Legend Trailer Related post : http://peteformation.blogspot.com/2008/07/bruce-lee-35th-death-anniversary.html

Part 1 - The Small Flasher & Part 2- Self Defense for Ladies– Street fight method

Part 1 Jo Ann (not her real name) is a pretty girl and wherever she goes; her looks will not fail to attract attention. She commutes daily to work using public transport and she has to walk quite a distance to the bus stop from her house. She has bumped into many flashers and got quite used to it until she is actually not afraid of these sick perverts anymore. There was a pervert living next door to her. One weekend, she wakes up quite early to do her laundry. While she was outside hanging out her clothes to dry, she noticed that her neighbour was acting suspiciously. Suddenly her neighbour pulled down his pants and flashes his ‘thing’ at her. She was unfazed by his action and kept her cool. She told the flasher loudly, “Ha Ha Ha, your ‘thing’ is damm small lah, just like a small kid and you got nothing to show”. Somehow, the insecure pervert just dash back into his home and actually move out of there after one week. I am not sure whether she made any police report or not. Caution: Ladies, don’t try to say this to a flasher, if you encounter one of these perverts, just walk a way quickly or shout for help. Part 2 With the crime rate rising, it is good to know some self defense techniques that will become handy if you are cornered. Our main purpose is to temporarily paralyze the assailant so that you will have time to run away. Don’t try to fight if the assailant is armed with dangerous weapon. Attack only when there is an opportunity to do so. The diagram shows some of the vulnerable point of the body. Please use this self defense method only when necessary as it is very dangerous and a strike with the right impact to some these areas may result in death.

Eyes: Use your fingers to jab the eye of the assailant. You will have a better reach with your hand if you open your palm and jab the eyes with your fingers. If you have your car keys, hold it between your fingers with your fist closed and use it to jab the attacker. I make it a point to hold my car keys this way while walking to the car park. The assailant can be permanently blinded. Nose: Use your fist, elbow or palm to hit the nose of the attacker. This will cause him great pain and may let you go if he is holding on to you. When he is in pain a hook (punch that swing in a curve) to the temple will bring him down. Adam’s apple: A right blow to the Adam’s apple can collapse the esophagus and may cause the assailant to die because he will not be able to breathe. If the assailant is very close to you, there might not be enough space for you to swing your arm. You can use your elbow to hit him. Bruce Lee’s one inch punch technique is useful here. You just need a short distance to swing your fist and before you reach the target, jerk your fist a bit to create the required impact. This technique requires some practice. Use a bundle of newspaper to practice this technique by repeating punching and jerking your fist at a very short distance movement. Solar plexus: The solar plexus is located just below the sternum of your chest and the tissue around this area is soft. Hold your fist with the middle finger part extended a bit. A punch to the solar plexus this way may kill if the impact strong enough. Use an umbrella to jab this area if you have one. Testes: You can use your knee or heel to kick this area. It will cause temporarily paralysis or permanent damage to the assailant. This will give you enough time to run away. Knee joint: A strong kick to the knee join will render the assailant temporarily paralyzed. I don’t really recommend this method as it is really not that easy to execute but some times in a fight you have no choice or if there is an opening. Things that you can use as weapon: Umbrella, car keys, high heels shoe, hair pins, pen, eyeliner......

Remember, your purpose is to temporarily paralyze the assailant so that you can run away. Your action has to be quick. Do practice a bit a home but be careful not to hurt your hubby.

Bruce Lee 35th Death Anniversary – Remembering a Great Martial Artist

Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong on 20th July 1973. He was 32 year old then and was at the peak of his career. Bruce was widely known as a very popular martial artist and actor. His father sent him to learn Wing Chun from Master Yip Man at a very young age. Lee perfected traditional fighting style and created Jeet Kune Do. Normally, when someone is attacked, he will block (defense) and look for opportunity to counter attack. In offensive defense, the technique involves combination of offense and defense. By doing this we can keep the opponent continually on the defensive because all attack are countered off with offense. For example, when an opponent try to punch you, one of his legs will advance towards you. When he is halfway through you can use your leg to attack his shin and knee. Using your leg to attack will also give you the advantage of reach which is longer than the opponent arm reach. Bruce one inch punch was known to send a 200lbs man flying back 15 feet. He was also well known for being able to perform exceptional physical feat like one-hand push-ups using only his thumb and index finger and breaking a punching bag with a sidekick. Among Bruce’s famous quote, the one that I like most is ‘Be self aware rather than a repetitious robot.’ We can apply this quote in martial art training and also our daily life. 'Woh oh oh oh, everybody loves Kung Fu fighting, hah uh….'I will be humming this popular song all day long. Can’t wait to drop by the gym in the morning! LOL These are the books about Bruce that I have read.
