Fresh wantan mee (egg wantan noodles) would turn crispy if deep fried. The sang mee that are served in most outlets in KL would add large fresh water prawns and this make them rather pricey, around RM50 per plate. This dish is known as har kau sang mee. Anyway, my home cooked versions do not have large fresh water prawn. I used fish cake and fish ball instead. My kids love the crispy texture of the deep fried wantan mee. It goes well with the thick gooey gravy that have been thicken with corn flour water mixture. I always keep some spare wantan mee in the fridge and us them to cook either breakfast or supper. Here is the recipe of Braised Sang Mee.
Ingredients
Wan tan mee, 1 pc
Oil for deep frying
Garlic, 3 cloves, minced and fried until golden brown
Fish Ball, 3 pcs
Fish Cakes, 4 to 5 slices
Light Soya Sauce, 1 table spoon
Black soya sauce, ¼ teaspoon
Salt to taste Egg, 1 pc, beaten slightly
Chicken meat, 5 to 6 pieces
Water and corn flour mixture
Oyster sauce
A dash of pepper
A few drops of sesame oil
Heat up oil and deep fry the wantan mee until it turns crispy. You have to be quick with your hands because the wantan mee burns easily. Drain away excess oil and put the crispy wantan mee aside. Put around 2 rice bowls of water in to a pot and bring to a boil. Put in the chicken meat, fish ball, fish cake, light soya sauce, sesame oil, black soya sauce, salt, oyster sauce and pepper. Add in the water and corn flour mixture to thicken the soup. Then add in the eggs while stirring the soup at the same time so that the eggs would form fine strands in it. Pour the soup over the crispy wantan mee and serve. Best eaten with pickled green chillies!

Pontian Wantan Noodles (Mee) at Sungai Wang Plaza, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur
Curry Mee (Curry Laksa). Opps, forgot to take photo before eating! LOL!
Fried wantons and my daughter's favourite strawberry snow ice. See all the ice sheet folds? Just like tissue papers! After a day out shopping, we decided to have our dinner at Sg Wang Plaza before driving home. We found this wantan noodle shop on the 3rd floor in the shopping complex and decided to check it out. I am not sure whether there is an original Pontian Wantan Mee in Pontian, Johore or not but this restaurant looked decent to me. I ordered a bowl of curry laksa (Curry Mee, RM5, and USD1.50) and my daughter had the Wantan Mee Soup (RM4.80, USD 1.45). For side dishes we ordered a plate of fried wanton (RM4, USD 1.20). My daughter wanted to try the Strawberry Snow Ice (RM3.90, USD1.18), so I ordered one for her and one Kopi O ice (Iced Coffee, RM1.70, USD0.50) for myself. The curry laksa (curry mee) is creamy and I like the mint like minced leaves the added to it. It actually tastes a little like Sarawak laksa minus the herbs and they use thick type of rice vermicelli in it. The Wanton Mee soup is nice too. I took a sip of the soup and found it to be quite tasty. I love chewing on the crunchy fried wanton but I think that the size is rather small. Anyway, I finished the whole plate in a jiffy! LOL! My daughter loves the Strawberry Snow Ice dessert so much. The ice is very fine and they are carved it as thin as a piece of tissue paper. In fact the whole serving looks like pieces of tissues folded together. It melts gently in your mouth! Nice! So in total we paid RM19.40 (no tax!) for all the food. This is reasonable price for an outlet located in prime Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle area.

My Favourite Wantan Mee at Matahari Coffee Shop (Kedai Kopi), Bandar Sri Damansara
At last, I found a good wantan mee that suits my taste buds. Matahari restaurant was newly renovated and they have different batch of hawkers occupying a stall at different time of the day. The first batch would operate the stall from morning till late lunch time and the next batch would take over at night. So, the same stall will sell different type of hawker food in the morning and at night. I was told that the young wantan mee stall owner actually paid a wantan noodles supplier extra money to put in additional ingredients in to the noodles supplied to him. The mee is more of the soft non springy type but have nicer flavour than normal wantan mee. He has also perfected the gravy for the dry wantan mee. Somehow the gravy is very special and I have I just love the taste! The wantan (sui kow) has nice sesame oil aroma and taste good. This is one of the best sui kow I ever tasted! His sui kow is a favourite among the night diners at this restaurant. Even the char siew has nice smoky smell. I would normally ‘tar pau’ the wantan mee for supper at night because the restaurant can be kind of stuffy and hot during peak hours. Whenever the helper sees me, she would know what I want to order. Before I reach the stall, she will say “Double large mee with char siew and wantan, sir?” (Double large mee RM5) Kedai Kopi Matahari
Jalan Tanjung SD13/1 Bandar Sri Damansara, 52200, Kuala Lumpur
This wantan mee stall operates from 3pm to 11pm Map to Matahari Restaurant, Bandar Sri Damansara
PS : Jan 2010, As of to date the original owner has moved to Setia Alam. The new person running the stall changed the wantan mee taste a little bit.

A Few Funny Shaped Wantons to go with my Wanton Mee for Supper
I was busy preparing Wantan Mee in the kitchen for supper and I got my little daughter to help me wrap the wanton so that I can fry them later. I combined all the fillings for the wanton and gave her the wanton skins to wrap it with. I told her to make triangular shaped wanton (Fried Sui Kau Recipe) with little fillings in it so that I can deep fried them quickly and make sure that the fillings are cooked easily.
My daughter, being very cheeky purposely made funny shaped wantons without me knowing it. Some were shaped like sweets in their plastic wrapper and some were like money bags!
I had to fry the wanton under medium/low heat to make sure that the meat fillings are cook thoroughly!
Luckily they tasted quite nice! Ha ha ha!

Chicken Wantan Mee (fresh egg noddle) Recipe – Halal
Won Ton, Wan Ton, Wanton, Wantan or Wontan, whatever you call it, is one of the local favourite hawker fast food. Wantan mee (egg noodles) are made from flour, alkaline water and eggs. The mee itself taste nice and there are a few ways to cook this very versatile noodle. The normal one served at a hawker stall is the dry type with black and light soya sauce. Then it is garnished with springs onions, char siew (sweet roast pork) and sawi (choy sum, vegetable). Every weekend, whenever I go to the wet market, I would buy some fresh wantan mee (egg wantan noodles) and keep them in my fridge. Somehow, kids love to eat wantan mee and I like to prepare it at home as supper for my kids instead of buying it from hawker stalls. This is my ‘modified’ version of the local Malaysian hawker wantan mee using chicken meat instead of barbecue pork. I make it with a little bit of soup and I found it to be tastier that way!
Ingredients
Wantan noodles, 1 serving
Gravy
Garlic, 3 pcs, chopped finely
Light soya sauce, 1 table spoon
Dark Soya Sauce, ½ teaspoon
Salt to taste
Chicken meat, 100 gms, minced
Vegetable oil, 1 table spoon
Sesame oil, 1 teaspoon
Oyster sauce, 1 teaspoon
Spring onions for garnishing, 1 stalk, cut into small piece
Blanch wantan noodle in boiling water and then put in cold water for a short while. Then blanch it again with boiling water and put aside. Put vegetable oil in wok and sautéed garlic until golden brown. Add a little water, light soya sauce, dark soya sauce, salt, chicken meat, sesame oil and oyster sauce. Add a little corn flour mixed with water to thicken the gravy a little. Pour the gravy over the noodles and mixed well. Garnish with spring onions and serve.

Wantan Mee, The Mall, Jalan Putra, Kuala Lumpur
It has been quite some time since I last visited the mall. I went to ROC (Registrar of Companies, Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia), which is located inside The Mall building recently and decided to check out the food court on the top floor of the shopping complex area. This place used to be very popular when it was newly opened in the 80’s, with Yaohan Departmental Store as the main attraction. The Mall is strategically located in Jalan Putra, directly opposite The Pan Pacific Hotel. The Legend Hotel is located within The Mall itself. I used to hang around The Monkey Bar inside this hotel when I was working for an engineering company, entertaining the company’s visitors from overseas!
There used to be many stalls in this food court but now it is a bit deserted. However, it is still a popular tourist place.
I ordered a plate of konlou (dry) wantan mee with fried wantans. Somehow I prefer to eat fried wantan than wet (soup) ones. This wantan mee stall has been operating here for quite some time. The gravy is sweet with a faint taste of oyster sauce, just nice, not too strong! At RM3.80 per plate in the middle of the city, I have no complains.

Wantan Mee – One Utama(1U) Food Court (HALAL)
Tasty Wantan Mee.................................................Wantan Mee Stall

Fried Rice with Telur dadar...................................Mini wok stall
For those of you who frequent 1U, you might be familiar with this wanton mee stall. I don’t normally take my food in shopping complexes food court, but whenever I am 1U, I will normally eat the wantan mee there. They use very little black soya sauce; I like my wantan mee this way. The chicken char siew (sweet BBQ chicken) is nice and tender. I prefer fried suikow(4pcs) more than the soup type. All this for RM5.78 (tax added, gosh, the government earn 5% every time I eat here). This stall also sells curry mee and cantonese sang mee.
My lovely lunch date ordered the fried rice from the Mini Wok stall which is next to this wantan mee stall. I guess the fried rice tasted ok, as she finished all of it.

If you miss Penang Curry Mee and Lam Mee, head to Desa Aman Puri (near Wangsa Permai, Kepong). It is located at a corner shoplot, next to the famous crab for RM18 per kg restaurant, Tak Fok. A husband and wife team operates this stall. They used to sell prawn mee and jawa mee but have since stopped because they just cannot cope with the orders during peak hours. The more chilli you add to the curry mee the better the taste will be, because like all the other Penang type of curry mee, the soup is quite mild. The chilli which contain a mixture of kerisek (fried grated coconut), shallots and probably some secret ingredients add some ‘real kick’ to the soup. I like my curry mee with lots of Tau Pok (fried bean curd).
This stall also sells Penang Lam Mee which goes well with the special lam mee chilli (a bit like a dry version of chicken rice chilli).
My son tried the Wan Tan Mee from another stall in this restaurant. He says it taste ok, but I think it is a bit on the sweet side. Maybe that's why kids like it.
There is a Chap Fan (Economy rice) here that have a good variety of dishes (I counted them, almost 50 types. Start selling early too, around 10 am). Maybe I will try the Chap Fan next time. My stomach was already full after finishing a bowl of Lam Mee and Curry Mee.
