Stretching the Ringgit – RM1 Al Safa Curry Fish Gravy and Home Made Roti Bom (Prata)

Rm1 per packet of Curry fish gravy with two ladies fingers!

'Flooding' the rice with curry fish gravy, long beans and hard boil egg!

My kids love to flood their rice with the spicy Mamak (Indian Muslim) curry fish gravy. I bought a packet of curry fish gravy only with 2 ladies fingers as additional dish for dinner from Al Safa Bandar Sri Damansara . It only cost me RM1 (USD0.30) for this packet of curry gravy which is about the volume of a rice bowl. I did not buy the fish because I already have steamed pomfret fish (bawal, tau teh) at home. Then I used my rice cooker to make 2 hard boil eggs. The Mamak fish curry gravy taste good with hard boil egg

Anyway after finishing our dinner, there was still some curry left, so I thought that it would be a good idea to make some roti canai to go with it for supper. Unfortunately I used only two cups of flour but added much butter and one egg is over the required amount to make a good roti canai. So the texture of the dough turned out too soft for me to throw and flip it to make roti canai like what you use to see at Mamak stalls. Therefore, I rolled them up to make roti bom or some might call it roti prata. After frying it using my non-stick pan, I found that it has the aroma and taste of roti bom or roti planta but the texture is flaky rather than springy like roti canai. Apart from the flawed texture, it actually tasted very good because the amount of butter and eggs used! LOL!

PS : Would you try the roti canai made by a Chinese if you come across such stall?

Making the dough and dividing it to golf ball sizes. Roti chanai turned out to be roti bom instead. The final product with fish curry gravy! Copyright Material of Peteformation Foodie Adventure

Restaurant Nasi Kandar Pelita SS2 Petaling Jaya, Roti Canai

This is my favourite hangout with my buddy, Tham during tea time. There is one Restaurant Nasi Kandar Pelita in my hometown in Chai Leng Park, Butterworth that I used to frequent. This is the first Pelita restaurant, opened in 1995. The mee (yellow noodles) rebus (local Indian Muslim noodles, with spicy gravy) at the Pelita in Chai Leng Park taste nice but the mee rebus in Pelita SS2 somehow tasted different. I don’t know why they cannot maintain the same standard as the one in Chai Leng Park.
However, I like the roti canai in the Pelita Restaurant in SS2. The roti itself is ok only but the curry is nice. I like to mix the dhal curry with fish curry, the result........very yummy! Sometimes, I would drop by here to have nasi kandar (spicy curry rice) for my lunch, with my lunch buddy, of course! Puri – Al Safa Restaurant (Mamak Stall)

Roti Canai is the main dish that many people will order whenever they visit the Mamak stall. I normally will go for the Puri which is not so oily and less filling. Puri is made from atta flour (whole grain durum wheat flour) and it taste nice. Puri is a popular vegetarian food. The puri puffs like a balloon just after frying and it is best eaten hot of the frying pan. I love to eat it with potato masala. I normally have my puri at Al Safa Restaurant. Try out the mee goreng(fried yellow noodles) when you are there. Food -Mee Rebus, Restaurant Nasi Kandar Che Abang at Tesco Ampang, KL -Halal

Restaurant Nasi Kandar Che Abang and Mee Rebus Note the packet of Mee Rebus that I 'Ta Pau" All gone except the lime skin! After my taking my lunch(low shi fun) in Pandan Jaya, I headed to Tesco Ampang to eat the Mee Rebus (Noodle with spicy gravy) in Restaurant Nasi Kandar Che Abang Kepala Batas. My wife would always remind me to ‘ta pau’ (takeaway) for her the mee rebus from this restaurant whenever she knows that I am heading toward this area. She claimed that the mee taste similar to the one she used to eat in her hometown, Butterworth, Penang. The gravy is a bit special as it is not thick but has the right combination of sweetness, spiciness and taste great with the lime provided. For RM4.00 the serving is rather large and I downed all of the mee with a glass of iced tea. However, service can be a bit erratic at times, wave and call out loud if the staff did not notice you!
