RM 2 Curry Mee at Loy Kee Restaurant (Kong Kee Roast Meat), Kepong Baru Wet Market

NOTE : Aug 2011, I noticed that the restaurant already closed down!

Sorry, photo not clear. It was taken using my lightweight Samsung Galaxy 5 mobile phone. I woke up early on Saturday and started my morning exercise routine at around 6.45am. After that I dropped by Kepong Baru wet market to have breakfast and also to buy some food stuff for the week. It has been a while since I last ate at Loy Kee Restaurant. So, I sat down and ordered my food right away. I decided to go for Curry Mee. When the waiter served the curry mee, he said, “RM2” (USD0.70) and I responded ‘Haaahh?”. Then I asked him again in Cantonese dialect, “How Much?”. He gave me back my RM5 and showed a peace sign with his fingers! Still couldn’t believe it, I proceeded to give him RM2 loose change. There are a few pieces of char siew and a piece of tofu pok in the curry mee. The gravy is thick and flavourful. For RM2, there is nothing to complain about! The serving is rather generous too! I thought of ordering a take away of Wanton mee for my son since the noodles are so cheap but when I wanted to order they told me that RM2 noodles are for dine in only! Ha ha ha! Actually I didn’t realize there is a sign at the entrance of the restaurant stating that they are having a promotion, RM2 for certain type of noodles, Monday to Saturday, from 6am to 10am only. I only saw this sign when I was leaving the restaurant. My morning coffee cost RM1.20 and Lemon Honey cold drink cost RM1.60. So, the total cost of this breakfast is only RM4.80!

Night Char Kueh Teow Stall Next to Restaurant Ali Food’s Corner in Kepong Baru – Simple and Nice

After a round of post dinner walk with my little toddler at Desa Park City, I drove up to Kepong Baru to check out the food there. This must be my lucky day, as I wanted to post about this stall long ago but every time I came looking for this Char Kuih Teow (fried flat noodles), it was closed. I was surprised to see the old Chinese uncle there busily frying the flat noodles. This wet market area is quite dark at night; I thought I am seeing ‘things’! Ha ha ha! Anyway, I asked the helper why they were closed for so long and she became curious; she said that they were open on most days except on Sunday when the pasar malam (night market) is on. The old uncle added that he will not operate the stall if it rains heavily. Ahhhh, now I know why, I missed this nice Char Kueh Teow stall so many times! LOL! Don’t let looks deceive you, the mobile stall might look old and the char kueh teow looks simple but the taste is just delicious. The way of frying is more of Southern style; a little wet and dark, unlike the Char Kueh Teow in Penang which is lighter in colour and dry as well. It has a nice ‘wok hei’ (wok heat) aroma and it is one of the good ones in KL that I came across. Another thing I like about this stall is the assistant uses disposable plastic to handle the raw keuh teow (noodles) to ensure cleanliness. The cooking utensils used are also clean! My wife loves the Char Kueh Teow from this stall very much, so I ‘tar pau’ (takeaway) one packet for her. She was busy at home helping my kids with their exam revision, so couldn’t join us for a night out! Prices start from RM3; I guess must be ‘kosong’ (without condiments or eggs, written in Mandarin, sorry lah, ‘Bananaman’ cannot read); Small is RM3.50 and Large RM4.00.
Don’t be surprised if you don’t see any chairs or tables provided by this stall. The Ali Food’s Corner Restaurant actually allows this Char Kueh Teow owner to serve it inside their outlet. However, be prepared to wait during peak hours! Fancy having sawi (Chinese mustard) added Char Keuh Teow with a cup of Mamak Teh Tarik? (Milk Tea)

Location: Night Char Kueh Teow Stall Next to Restaurant Ali Food’s Corner c/o 28, Persiaran Mergastua, Kepong Baru (Same row, the other end of Mobil)

Kepong Baru Morning Wet Market - Economy Fried Bihun, Kueh Kark, Roast Pork, Soya Bean Milk, Pancake-Non Halal

by Pete I have always enjoyed going to the wet market. Kepong Baru market is a big place and you can find almost everything you need. Kepong is well known for PCL…….. Peang(cheap), Cheang (good) and Leang(nice) food, or leang lui(pretty girls)(want to know more?… go there and check it out). Look for the economy fried bihun(rice vermicelli) stall as in my map. It is fried to perfection with a tinge of smoky smell. RM1.60 for a small packet, RM1.80 for a medium packet and RM2.00 a big packet (can feed two persons) (price subject to changes…..oil price going up …mah). The stall is manned by a friendly young guy. He took over this stall from an old lady who retired last year. Fried mee, fried kueh teow and fried low shi fun are also available. As tables for customers are not available in this stall, you can tar pau (takeaway) and bring it to any of the nearby restaurant to eat it there. As long as you order drinks from the restaurant they will not chase you out for bringing outside food. I will usually take it to the wan tan mee restaurant just behind the bihun stall. I enjoy the bihun while my son normally eats the wan tan mee here. Check out also the kueh kark and soya bean milk next to the bihun stall. The kueh kark is good (same owner as the one in Bukit Maluri pasar malam on Sunday night). As for the soya bean milk you just need a RM2.00 packet and that is good enough for a family of 4 people. I love the taste of soya milk mixed with leong fun. My map (2) also shows the location of the roast pork, fresh tofu and chinese pancake stall. The roast pork is normally sold out by 10.30am so be there early if you want to taste it. I like the tofu from this stall because the texture is fine and smooth. You just have to deep fried the tofu and eat it with chili sauce. While I was there, I saw some City Hall officer were busy checking the vendors’ license and also taking pictures (wow….City Hall officers working on Sunday!). Many vendors were seen scrambling to keep their goods that have been displayed on illegal extension to their stall. I stopped snapping away with my camera when some of the vendors were staring suspiciously at me. Maybe they thought that I am an undercover City Hall officer, me?.....in my singlet and shorts …….undercover ha ha ha. Economy fried bihun (rice vermicelli)- Thumbs up! The fried bihun stall

My favourite fish vendor. Fishes all sold out while I was busy snapping pictures.
Oh oh....only left a tilapia, a halibut and two barracoutas. Heh heh, good reason to tell my wife that I am going fishing this afternoon.
The fish stall vendor and her son busy cleaning fish.
Next to my favourite fish stall. A small stall selling Indian wet curry and chili paste The auntie, owner of the stall suddenly went missing.....must be camera shy!
Vendors and business owners around the area

bought from the market. Petai, chicken, vegetables,
fruits, fish, prawns, bean curd sheet, tofu, tou kan(wet tofu sheet),
fried bihun, marie bisquits, mushroom, eggs, spiderman stickers and
bubbles blowing liquid for my little girl.............Carry until 'pengsan'
