Chong Hwa Independent High School, Jalan St Thomas, KL canteen has around 10 stalls offering many varieties of nice and nutritious food. There are stalls selling Chicken Rice, economy rice, wantan mee, laksa, hokkien mee, fried bihun, drinks, burger, bread, mamak food (roti canai and nasi kandar), curry mee, yong tau foo and many other types of food. The stalls are very clean too compared to many other school canteens.
Since this is a school canteen, the price of the food here is very much lower compared to the ones outside. Although the price of food is very reasonable, they stalls operators did not compromise on the quality and taste of the food. Most of the food here are very delicious and some even taste so much better that ones you can find around KL.
These are some of the food that I have tried in Chong Hwa canteen.
Chicken Rice
This is my top favourite food in this canteen. The roast chicken is well marinated and simply delicious. It tastes so much better than many so called popular chicken rice stalls around KL. The chicken rice chilly is very spicy and flavourful. One plate cost only RM2.40. I finished a plate of chicken rice with a glass of herbal tea (Pat chee chow) which cost me only RM0.50.
Hokkien Mee
The Hokkien Mee (har mee) sells for RM2.00 a bowl. The servings are quite generous and it is garnished with all the common ingredients for a Hokkien mee. There are fish cake, prawn meat, hard boiled eggs and fried shallots. I added a dollop of bright red chilly and this really brings out the flavours in the gravy. Nice!
Assam Laksa
I opted for a bowl of Assam Laksa during tea time. I can’t remember the cost but I think it was RM2.00 per bowl. At this price the laksa still has all the necessary ingredients and garnishing. Taste rather nice!
Wantan Mee
I bought a plate of dry (kon low) wantan mee for RM2.00. This is the first time I came across wantan mee garnished with taugeh (beansprout). Accompanying the noodles is crispy fried wantan and char siew. The oyster sauce taste is a little bit strong and the wantan mee is not salty. Perhaps if the stall owner adds in a little more sesame oil, the flavours can be enhanced further. But overall the taste is quite ok and the fried wantan is nice!
Roti Canai
I forgot to take the pictures of the roti canai I had. It cost me RM0.80 per piece. The roti a little bit tough but the curry is nice. A large cup of coffee with milk cost me RM1.10. So my breakfast only cost me RM1.90. Ha ha ha!

Uiks? Allow to go in meh? Wah...much nicer than my school's canteen leh.
Are all school canteens in KL like that? I had a 1-month stint at Bukit Bintang Boys' and they rented out the stalls. So many choices like at a hawker centre! Nice!
Here, they tender the canteen out to one person and good or bad, that's what you get! So terrible...
Christine : Most Chinese Independent schools have nice canteen!
TZ : Actually not, but sometime they allow during open days!
Smallkucing : If you can go in Han Chiang Penang, check out the food there, even nicer, yum yum!
STP : Not all KL schools like that, some very teruk, my former kebangsaan schools are also the same, food not nice. That is why I am so skinny...ha ha ha.
Most school here also tender to one person.
I think the school canteen stall decision depends on the HM and PIBG.
canteen food is always cheaper than the outside stalls sold to public.. last time i used to go St. Michael canteen to eat but now no more cos they r stricter, they never open up the side door for us to go in already.. :)
Claire : Hah, ST Michael, the famous school. How is the school nowadays, I heard it is not as good as the old days.
