Penang Assam Laksa Recipe - Sour food for man can help wife to conceive baby Boy, believe it or not?

Yes, yes, another sour and spicy dish post! Nope, my wifey is not pregnant......errrr, maybe?...he he he!
I cooked this Penang Assam Laksa last weekend because my friend who stays in Bandar Botanic in Klang gave me a big bunch of mint (po ho, pudina). She planted the mint in her home garden. I garnished my laksa with lots of mint! mmmmm, nice leh! yum yum!

I didn't buy any Kembong Fish (Indian Mackerel) but used canned tuna instead. Actually, I find peeling the kembong fish for Assam Laksa takes up too much time, so I tried to substitute it with canned fish. Although the soup didn't turned out as good as the one using fresh Indian Mackerel fish, I still find all the other assam Laksa flavours in it. I shared the assam laksa with my next door and opposite neighbours.
For the Assam Laksa recipe you can click this link to my previous post, Penang Assam Laksa Recipe.

PS : My ex boss used to tell me that, guys who loves to eat sourish food would produce baby boy when their wife conceive. He don't like sourish food, so he had 3 daughters. Mmmm, I wonder whether that is true or not? I have 2 sons! Believe it or not? LOL!

Unripe Mango in Spicy Light Soya Sauce Recipe

This is another dish that I always crave to have with rice.  LOL! Alright, ladies, don't laugh lah, guys also have cravings.....but most of the time the 'wrong' type of 'craving' not the pregnant type of craving. ha ha ha!
Mango goes along very well with rojak sauce but this is a shortcut way to do it. The simple Unripe Mango Salad in Spicy Light Soya sauce never fails to make me eat more rice. Peteformation need to put on weight!

I used to have this type of mango tree in my hometown house garden. It will bear fruits all year round and most of the time we will give them away. Unfortunately, my dad chopped it down when some of the branches starts to rot. Most of our neighbours would plant the mango seeds after they ate them, so whenever I pass by my old house nowadays, I could see the offsprings mango plants of our original mango tree lining the road there.

Ingredients
Mango, 1 big unripe, cut into small strips
Light soya sauce, enough to cover 2/3 of the mango
Sugar, to taste
Chili padi (bird eye chilli), 5 pcs, chopped finely

Put all the ingredients in a bowl and mix until all the sugar dissolves. Chill the mango with spicy light soya sauce in the fridge before consuming.

PS : The light soya sauce required is only 2/3 to cover the mango because the saltiness of the sauce would cause the water in the mango cells to flow out through osmosis process into the sauce. After a short while, you will see that the sauce covering the mango.

Ate my mango spicy light soya sauce, Sambal Sotong Kembang, prawn fritters and stir fried vegetable with rice!

Simple Sambal Sotong Kembang (Cuttlefish) Recipe

I was craving for some spicy dish to accompany my rice for dinner. It just happened that I have some frozen cuttlefish (sotong kembang) in my fridge and some long beans as well. Both are good combination for sambal(chilli) dish.
Here is my recipe for Spicy Sambal Sotong Kembang (cuttlefish).

Ingredients
Sotong Kembang (cuttlefish), 1 small, cut into bite sizes
Long Beans, 4 pcs, cut into 1 " length
Shallots, 3 pcs, chopped finely or blended
Chilli paste, 2 tablespoons
Belachan (fermented shrimp paste), 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Sugar to taste
Vegetable oil, 3 tablespoons

Heat up wok and put in the vegetable oil. Saute shallots and chilli paste for a short while. Add in the belachan. Keep on stiring the mixture until fragrant. Put in the long beans. Fry until the long beans are cooked. Add salt and sugar to taste. Put in the cuttle fish a fry for a short while only or else it will turned rubbery!
Serve with steamed rice or coconut milk rice (nasi lemak) while still hot.

Coffeeshop Talk with My American Friend – Ah Beng & 1Malaysian Email

One morning at Ah Lian’s Kopitiam……

John : How many emails addresses do you have, Pete?

Pete : Three. Two personal and one company email.

John : You are going to have another one soon. Looks like every Malaysian citizen above 18 is going to get one email address each very soon.

Pete : Ya I know. I heard that some guys are launching a protest in Facebook against this plan.

Then Ah Beng and Ah Lian joined in ……

Ah Beng (Chicken Rice stall owner) : Hey hey hey, now I am at par with both you guys lah! Mmmmmmm…I wonder whether they allow me to put my email address as chickenking@my-email.com.my? Then I can have Facebook account…….maybe user name as The Jinjang Chicken King. Good publicity for my chicken rice stall leh!

Ah Lian : Woit Ah Beng, stop dreaming lah! Your house doesn’t even have broadband line and computers leh. How to access your email? You know email use for what meh?

Ah Beng : What ! Sure know lah! I can send email to everyone in Malaysia to advertise my chicken rice stall leh. Imagine I can reach 27 million Malaysians with my email leh! Wah, fatt tatt (rich) lorrrr!

Pete : Hey Ah Beng, like that you are creating Spam mail liao! Your account will sure be banned.

John : Chicken King? Ha ha ha, the morning chicken rice one or the ‘night prowling at dark alleys one’? Ah Beng, I am impressed with your knowledge about Facebook and emails. Where did you learn it from?

Ah Beng : Aiya, you don’t know meh? During Cheng Beng (Tomb Sweeping Day, Pure Bright Day), the guy running the prayers paraphernalia shop told me to buy the latest paper modems, routers, Hellunifi subscription, HelliPhone and paper notebook. Some more ah, he thought me how to connect them up before burning so that my ancestors can use the Hellband instantly and go online. This prayer set also comes with a User Manual in Chinese. I took a look at the user manual….so now I am expert in Hellspace, er …no lah,.Cyberspace gadgets liao!
Now my ancestors can also join the Join ChurpChurp Race  also from down under! Ha ha ha!

Ah Lian : Beng, don’t bluff lah, I know you always go to the Internet Café at night to chit chat with your China doll gurlfrens (girlfriends).

Ah Beng : shhhhhh, my wife hear this, I habis (finished)!

Unique Hawker Food from Food Court in Sg Rambai, Bukit Mertajam

My sister 'tar pau' (take away) the food as in the photos below for me when I was back in my home town recently. She bought them from a food court at Sg Rambai in Bukit Mertajam(BM). I have not been to that place, so I can't comment much about it. Maybe I will drop by on my next trip back.
The photo below shows a hawker food named 'Steamed Kueh Teow'. This is the first time I ate this type of Keuh Teow. The kueh teow (flat rice noodles) is of the wide type just like the one used in Penang Tuapan. There are pieces of fish fillet inside and the soup is very flavourful. I can't really describe the actual taste but it is really good! Unfortunately, they did not cut the fish properly and there are some bones still left in the fillet.

The bihun (rice vemicelli) might look very plain and colourless, but it is actually very delicious. There are crispy anchovies in the bihun and the sambal belachan (fermented shrimp paste chilli) goes along really well with this unique dish. I must make a point to check out this food court in Sg Rambai BM, on my next trip! LOL!
