Simple Orange Chicken Recipe

After savouring the nice orange chicken dish at Chan Heng Tambun, I came up with my own version. You can use deboned chicken or chicken meat for this recipe. As for me, I have stock for 2 chicken thighs and since I was rushing to cook dinner, I didn't deboned them. I used KFC flourthat I bought off the shelf to deep fry the chicken before pouring the orange sauce over it. You can use any flour for frying chicken for this recipe. Just make sure that you don't add too much salt to the sauce because some deep frying flour for chicken can be a little salty.

Ingredients
Chicken Meat, 500 gms
Deep frying flour, enough to coat chicken
Egg white from 1 egg
Orange juice from 1 orange
Orange rind, just a little
Salt to taste
Sugar to complement the orange juice if it is sour
Corn flour and water mixture

Pour the egg white onto the chicken meat and mix well. Coat chicken with deep frying flour and deep fry them in hot oil until crisp. Take out the chicken and drain away excess oil. Pour a little water in a pan and bring to a boil. Add in the corn flour and water mixture to thicken the sauce. Add salt and sugar to taste. Pour in the orange juice and add the orange rind. Bring to a boil and pour the orange sauce on top of the crispy deep fried chicken meat.

Guinness St Patrick’s Merry Me Cheers at Sid’s Pub

After the GAB St Patrick’s Celebration media launch, the "Merry Me" party continues on to Sid’s Pub in Damansara Heights. The first Sid’s Pub opened in 2007 and this Damansara Heights outlet is the latest addition to their series of friendly neighbourhood pubs. I have been away from the pubs scene after I left engineering but looks like I am back again this month! Watch out…..Pete is back! LOL!

The place was already packed with patrons when I arrived around 7.30pm. We kicked off the night’s party with a pint of cool and smooth Guinness Draught. “Ol, ceol and craic” (Irish saying for a great pint, good music and wonderful fun). Ok, Let’ roll!

We had Pigs in Blankets (RM16, USD4.80) as starters. I think it is a rather cute name for a dish. Pigs in Blankets are fried sausages wrapped with bacon. The chubby sausages and slightly crisp bacon aroma filled the air when the dish was placed on our table. I love the savoury taste and succulent sausages! We ate two plates of Pigs in Blankets! A good start for us to down more Guinness Draught! Ha ha ha!

Blue cheese has blue spots because of the cultured mold Pennicillium in it. Due to this, blue cheese has distinct smell, sharp taste and a little salty. That explains well the unique taste of this Blue Cheese Mushroom (RM14, USD4.20) and it goes along well with the toast.

Tuna Nicoise (French word, RM14, USD4.20) is actually a salad dish. Love the crunchy and fresh lettuce inside it!

I love the Shepherd’s Pie presentation. Sid’s Shepherd Pie (RM24, USD7.30) uses slices of potato as the upper crust instead of the usual mashed potatoes. Take a piece and pour the sauce over it; mmmmm, yummy!

Fancy having a breakfast treat at anytime you wanted to? Greasy Caff All Day Breakfast platter (RM28, USD8.50) is available throughout the day at Sid’s Pubs. This wholesome meal consists of sautéed mushroom, back bacon, sausage, toast, baked beans and potato fries. Greasy Caff All Day Breakfast is a very filling and satisfying dish because I like everything inside it!

Ben Nevis in Scottish Gaelic, a language native to Scotland is the name of the highest mountain in the United Kingdom. As per its’ namesake, Sid’s Pubs Ben Nevis Burger (RM28, USD8.58) is really huge! Frank told us that anyone who could finish three of these pork burgers at one go gets free flow of drinks for the night. Ask Frank for details if you wish to take up the challenge! The pork based burger patties are very delicious, which explains why Sid’s Pubs sell 1200 plates of Ben Nevis Burger every month.

I was very eager to try the tempting Cod and Chips (RM32, USD9.70) and forgot that I only took one photo shot of it which happened to be a little blurred. Need another round of Guinness@ to make my hand steady! LOL! The crispy batter coated fish is very fresh and tasty.

He he he, time for dessert! The chocolate Fudge Brownie (RM12, USD3.60) is smooth and has the right sweetness to complement the ice cream that tops it.

Final dessert for the night was the Bread and Butter Pudding (RM10, USD3). It has a good combination of flavours with a tinge of sourish taste.

Friendly Mr Bubu is always ready to serve you! TQ!

Wanna party? Come to Sid’s Pub Bukit Tunku on 20th March 2010, Sunday for their outdoor Guinness St Patrick’s Celebration. It starts at 1pm (yes, 1 pm!) and there will be Happy Hour all day long!

Kpoh Restaurant, Desa Aman Puri, Kepong, KL, Authentic Ipoh Food

Unfortunately, This restaurant has since closed down.....

Errrr, what's this ar? Smells good......taste a little....
Wah, yum yum......., so tasty, this Ipoh Hor Fun! Thumbs up....
Arrrrrr, this way faster....., slurp, slurp.......slurrrrrrppppp,
I would try to bring my kids for a walk or cycling every weekend so that I can spend quality family time with them. After a good round of walking and exercising at Desa Park City lakeside, we decided to go for our morning breakfast. I wanted to have it in a cozy and quiet place so that I can chat peacefully with my kids. We drove to Desa Aman Puri which is not very far away from Desa Park City and settled down to have our breakfast at Kpoh Restoran that serves authentic Ipoh food. I have driven by this area many times but never tried the food here, although Kpoh has been for around a year or so. What amazed me is that, after a year plus, they still managed to keep this restaurant squeaky clean. No wonder it is categorized by the local Town Council as Class A Restaurant which means the highest standard for cleanliness. Here are the "Ipoh Mari" fares we ate, My daughter loves Ipoh Hor Fun, so we ordered this bowl of Kai Si (Chicken Meat) Hor Fun plus bihun (rice vermicelli) for her. This flavourful Hor Fun has generous serving of Ku Chai (Chinese Chives) and shredded chicken meat. On top of that it is garnished with spring onions and prawns. Although the soup looks clear, it is very tasty and delicious. My daughter commented that Kpoh's Hor Fun tasted very much nicer than the ones that she usually eat at those kopitiam franchise outlets. I guess she would bug me again to eat here next weekend! LOL!The Hor Fun cost RM4.50 (USD1.40) per bowl.
My wife settled for the curry mee (RM4.50, USD1.40) which the friendly owner told us is different from those creamy types you usually find in KL. The spicy chilly based gravy tasted a little like the Curry Mee I had in Pantai Remis. For those who like spicy stuff, this curry mee is for you.
I normally eat Chee Cheong Fun with Har Ko (prawn paste) but this time around I tried out the Mushroom Chee Cheong Fun at this outlet. The Chee Cheong Fun has light gravy with a tinge of sesame oil aroma. It is garnished with Chee Mau (fried sesame), crispy shallots, mushroom slices and spring onions. I like the smooth chee cheong fun and the light but savoury gravy. A plate like this cost RM4.00 (USD 1.20)
For some light snack we ordered the Sengkuang (Turnips) which is a turnip based filling kuih (snacks) wrapped with foo pei (bean sheets, tau poey in Hokkien, lobak skin). These ‘Sengkuang’ is crispy and fresh. Actually, it taste a bit like the TeowChew ‘Kuang Chiang Kuih’ which has similar ingredients with this Sengkuang wrap. The Sengkuang tasted yummy with the chilly that accompanied it. The Sengkuang wrap cost RM3 for 3 pieces.
The clean and tidy restaurant. Good for family meals and friends outing . Menu with photos to help you with your choice of food to order.
Refreshing and cool Chrysanthemum tea. (RM1.60)

Fried Nian Kao (Tee Kuih) with Mi Ku Recipe

I normally fry Nian Kao (Chinese New Year Sweet Rice Cake) together with yam or sweet potato. Since I do not have either sweet potato nor yam in stock I used the mee ku that I made for Pai Tnee Kong to fry with the nian kao. This is the first time I fry the nian kao this way and it actually tasted quite good. I gave some to my neightbour and my family ate the rest of it for breakfast! LOL!

Ingredients
Nian Kao(Tee Kuih), cut into slices
Miku, 1 pc, cut into slices same size as the nian kao
Flour, 1/2 cup
Rice Flour, 1 cup
Baking Soda, 1/4 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Water

Mix both flour together and add water slowy, while stiring the mixture to turn into a batter. Put in the baking soda and a little salt to taste. Put the nian kao and mee ku (mi ku) together and dip into the batter. Scoop them out and deep fry them in hot oil. Serve while still hot and crispy. Use medium heat to fry the nian kao because nian kao would turn black easily because of its' high sugar content.

Sayur Manis from my Garden – Simple Healthy Recipe

Sayur Manis (Sauropus Androgynus, Sayur Mani, Mani Cai, Katuk, star gooseberry) can be easily cultivated by just using the matured stems. They grow well under bright sunlit area with adequate water. Sayur manis is used to garnish Pan Mee and it is full of natural sweetness like its’ namesake! You can read about the chemical content in Sayur manis from my previous post, Edible Plants, Fruits and Herbs in a Foodie’s Garden. Anyway, the Sayur Manis in the photo above are produce from my little garden. It grows very well without much care needed. I would normally stir fry Sayur Manis with eggs. I think most families would cook it the same way too. Here is the simple recipe.

Ingredients
Sayur Manis, remove stems, just keep the leaves
Eggs, 1 pc, lightly beaten
Garlic, 3 pcs, chopped finely
Salt to taste
Vegetable oil, ½ tablespoon

Heat up wok and put in the vegetable oil. Saute garlic until fragrant and put in the sayur manis. Add a little water and slowly pour in the eggs. Add salt to taste. Serve with steamed rice.

RM 2 Curry Mee at Loy Kee Restaurant (Kong Kee Roast Meat), Kepong Baru Wet Market

NOTE : Aug 2011, I noticed that the restaurant already closed down!

Sorry, photo not clear. It was taken using my lightweight Samsung Galaxy 5 mobile phone. I woke up early on Saturday and started my morning exercise routine at around 6.45am. After that I dropped by Kepong Baru wet market to have breakfast and also to buy some food stuff for the week. It has been a while since I last ate at Loy Kee Restaurant. So, I sat down and ordered my food right away. I decided to go for Curry Mee. When the waiter served the curry mee, he said, “RM2” (USD0.70) and I responded ‘Haaahh?”. Then I asked him again in Cantonese dialect, “How Much?”. He gave me back my RM5 and showed a peace sign with his fingers! Still couldn’t believe it, I proceeded to give him RM2 loose change. There are a few pieces of char siew and a piece of tofu pok in the curry mee. The gravy is thick and flavourful. For RM2, there is nothing to complain about! The serving is rather generous too! I thought of ordering a take away of Wanton mee for my son since the noodles are so cheap but when I wanted to order they told me that RM2 noodles are for dine in only! Ha ha ha! Actually I didn’t realize there is a sign at the entrance of the restaurant stating that they are having a promotion, RM2 for certain type of noodles, Monday to Saturday, from 6am to 10am only. I only saw this sign when I was leaving the restaurant. My morning coffee cost RM1.20 and Lemon Honey cold drink cost RM1.60. So, the total cost of this breakfast is only RM4.80!

Soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Meru, Klang

It was already 3pm when my business partner and I finished our appointment in Setia Alam. We decided to check out the food stalls in Jalan Meru and found Soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh in a row of shop lot, visible from the Jalan Meru main road. It seems that soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh just moved to this new location and hence the owner hangs up large red banner that you couldn’t miss! This stall shares the same location as a Chinese Restaurant. The owner was preparing to close and we were his last customer. LOL! The friendly and accommodating owner told us not to worry and we can take our time to savour the food. We sat down and quickly ordered one bak kut teh and one hot pepper intestine soup. Nice aroma of the herbs in the Bak Kut Teh permeates the air when it was served. The soup is very tasty, thick and sweet. We asked for pai kuat(ribs) and lean meat. They were very tender and the meat actually soaked up all the nice herbal soup. There are fook chok (fried bean curd sheet) and tau pok in it as well. The hot pepper soup was still boiling when it arrived at our table. You can see all the bubbles in the photo I took. There are kam cham (dry lily flower) flower in the peppery intestine soup which I have not eaten for quite some time. The hot peppery soup sure makes us sweat right after we finished our first bowl. It was a sunny day and drinking this soup made us sweat profusely! LOL! The total bill for 2 person plus rice and 2 glasses of water came up to be RM18.50 (USD 5.60). I am dropping by again to try out the dry Bak Kut Teh!
