Soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Meru, Klang

It was already 3pm when my business partner and I finished our appointment in Setia Alam. We decided to check out the food stalls in Jalan Meru and found Soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh in a row of shop lot, visible from the Jalan Meru main road. It seems that soon Hock Claypot Bak Kut Teh just moved to this new location and hence the owner hangs up large red banner that you couldn’t miss! This stall shares the same location as a Chinese Restaurant. The owner was preparing to close and we were his last customer. LOL! The friendly and accommodating owner told us not to worry and we can take our time to savour the food. We sat down and quickly ordered one bak kut teh and one hot pepper intestine soup. Nice aroma of the herbs in the Bak Kut Teh permeates the air when it was served. The soup is very tasty, thick and sweet. We asked for pai kuat(ribs) and lean meat. They were very tender and the meat actually soaked up all the nice herbal soup. There are fook chok (fried bean curd sheet) and tau pok in it as well. The hot pepper soup was still boiling when it arrived at our table. You can see all the bubbles in the photo I took. There are kam cham (dry lily flower) flower in the peppery intestine soup which I have not eaten for quite some time. The hot peppery soup sure makes us sweat right after we finished our first bowl. It was a sunny day and drinking this soup made us sweat profusely! LOL! The total bill for 2 person plus rice and 2 glasses of water came up to be RM18.50 (USD 5.60). I am dropping by again to try out the dry Bak Kut Teh!

Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh, Puchong - New Location

I was in Puchong recently and I decided to drop by Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh restaurant. I found that there is a new restaurant operating in the old location that Teluk Pulai used to be. But when I drove to the the row of shoplot behind the old location, I found Teluk Pulai restaurant there, at the corner facing the main road. Hah, lucky me, I can satisfy my cravings for a good bowl of Bak Kut Teh (Pork Herbal Soup). So, I quickly parked my car and sat down to order! I asked for rice with long beans and dried prawns (Heh bee), yau char kwai (Chinese Crullers) and a bowl of pork ribs bak kut teh. This is a plain type of bak kut teh but with strong herbal smell and flavourful soup. I washed down the bak kut teh and rice with a pot of Chinese Tik Kuan Yin tea. Mmmmm, a very satisfying lunch! LOL!

A Round Family Trip to Empangan Batu (Sg Tua), Ulu Yam, Batang Kali and Rawang (Bak Kut Teh)

It was a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and I decided to take my family for an outing. I have not been back to Empangan Batu (Batu Dam, built during the colonial days) in Sg Tua for quite some time already. The water in this dam flows from the Titiwangsa Mountain Range. My last trip there many years ago was to hunt for Toman fish. There are lots of Toman in this Dam that provides water supply to residents in the Klang Valley. Unfortunately they are quite smart and it is not easy to catch them. The toman fish over populated and adapted well in this dam. The number of carps and other fish population dropped drastically. Most of them especially juvenile fishes fell prey to the aggresive toman. First stop at Empangan Batu. It is nice to enjoy the peaceful and serene scenic atmosphere around the dam. I saw some mountain bikers had just finished their expedition and were relaxing at the stop area at the dam. This is a nice rest area. Sadly, very typical of Malaysian public places; the toilet is in bad shape and need major repairs. Next, we stopped by a fruit stall near Ulu Yam. We ended up buying banana, coconut, guava, pineapple and rambutans.

We were very hungry by the time we reached Rawang town. I was looking for the chicken rice coffee shop ( Hock Tong Hong) but unfortunately they were no longer around. I wonder where they have moved to? Therefore we just hop in to Restaurant Try To Eat at Rawang main road near Bintang Supermarket for a quick meal of Bak Kut Teh. We must have been very hungry because the simple bak kut teh (all pai kuat, pork ribs) with rice tasted so good. LOL!

Lunch at Restoran Makanan Laut (Seafood Restaurant) Hock Heng Huat, Tg Sepat

After a quick stop by the Sepang Gold Coast seaside, we headed towards Tg Sepat for lunch. Hock Heng Huat is located at the end of Jalan 2, opposite the Chinese Temple. The kitchen was busy preparing food for two groups of tour buses when we arrived, so we have to wait quite a while for our food. Anyway, Hock Heng Huat is not so packed like the other restaurant near the seaside in Tg Sepat. The food here is actually quite good and I would rather have my lunch at a peaceful and ambient restaurant. Furthermore there are plenty at the open ground opposite the restaurant. We ordered the curry shark, fried sweet potato leaves, fried kailan vegetable, fried squid and tofu crabmeat soup. The total bill for 6 adults and 2 toddlers came up to be RM70. Here are the food photos and reviews.

I wish they would not cut the shark meat so tiny but then it might not be able to absorb all the nice curry gravy if they do so. This curry shark dish is very nice, spicy and bursting with flavours. I like it very much.
The fried squid is fresh and crunchy. My kids ate most of the squid.

The sweet potato leaves dish has very nice ‘wok hei’ (wok burnt) smell and it reminds me of the Tuapan gravy back in my hometown. This stir fried vegetable taste delicious!
Next, the savoury crabmeat tofu soup was served. Actually the serving portion was a little too large and we had a hard time finishing the soup, although it was very tasty. The crabmeat with tofu soup is sweet and delicious!

The stir fried kailan has the same ‘wok hei’ gravy as the sweet potato leaves. It goes along well with the nice crunchy kailan. Another tasty vegetable dish

Crab Seafood Restaurant Sdn Bhd – A Dinner Outing During Earth Hour

It was Earth day and my sister wanted to take my family out for dinner. Actually we planned to eat in another restaurant at Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara but found that it has changed owner. Anyway, since we are already in the area, we decided to check out Crab Seafood Restaurant which is directly opposite the famous Vichuda (HQ Damansara Utama) branch restaurant. Since it a little late and we are not familiar with the dishes in this restaurant, we just order the set dinner which cost RM188. The restaurant is under staffed and they have a few inexperience waiters/waitresses. So you can expect things to be a bit disorganised! It was peak dinner time and we waited quite some time for our food. However, when the first dish of fried rice arrived, it really changed our perception about the restaurant and its’ service. The fried rice is nice with a tinge of ‘wok hei’ aroma. Since everyone was already very hungry, we finished the fried rice real fast!

Here is the review on the other dishes in the set dinner menu.

Next, the Butter and Milk Cod fish was served. The gravy is nice and creamy. Curry powder is added to this flavorful gravy. Actually, I used to cook this type of dish using tilapia (St Peter’s Fish) but this is the first time I ate it with cod fish. Everyone agreed that this dish is delicious! Thumbs up!

The Crispy Indonesian Chicken is topped with sweet and sour kerabu. It is a totally new taste to me. The chicken is deep fried with flour and spices. The contrast of the savoury and crispy fried chicken against the sweet, sour and spicy kerabu is very unique! Another thumb up!

Yam Basket Chicken There is nothing to shout about this dish except that the yam is nicely done and taste good.

Special Chilli Crab with Buns I normally would not order sweet and sour crab but the taste of this crab dish surprised me a little. It really taste good compared to the ones that I have eaten in other restaurant. I love to dip the bun (muntou) in the rich gravy.......taste heavenly! The crab is full of flesh and sweet! Hong Kong Kailan with Oyster sauce The cook actually fried the Hong Kong Kailan with a little dried chilly. This adds a nice unique aroma to this dish. Another thumb up! A Comlimentary fruit platter which is part of the set meal was served after we ate our dinner. We ordered a side dish of Tomyam Bihun (rice vermicelli) but it came late. By that time we were already stuffed! Anyway, my son and I ate the tomyam bihun. The taste, ok only lah! The total bill came up to be RM208.50 for 6 adults and 2 children. Overall the food is nice and tasty. They have to hire more experienced staff and improve the service. Address : Crab Seafood Restaurant Sdn Bhd No. 23-1 & 23-3 Jalan PJU 5/9 Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara 47810, Tel : 03 61482232 I found this address in the card I took from the counter. A Drive around Sepang, Tg Sepat and Jugra (Sea, Lighthouse, Paragliding, Food, Fruits and Pau)

We took advantage of the long Raya holiday to drive around the outskirt of Selangor. This is sort of an educational trip for my kids, something that our family would do whenever time permits. From Subang Jaya we headed to the KLIA highway and passed through the F1 circuit. Our first stop after the Sepang town was ‘Sepang Corner Healty Fruits and Florist, Kg Batu 1, Sg Pelek’ orchard and stall. This is a popular spot by the roadside and you can see loads of customer patronizing this stall that sells mainly dragon fruit (red pitaya; Hylocereus Undatus; Vietnamese, Thanh Long). We had a great free fruit tasting experience and the owner was rather generous in serving the free dragon fruits sample. The red dragon fruits are nice and juicy. I took the opportunity to wander around the small orchard. Here are some pictures I took. Sepang Corner Helthy Fruits and Florist orhard and stall. 1) Bird nest house above the fruit stall. 2) Red Pitaya ice cream, anyone care to try?
Red pitaya flower about to bloom and.................an unripe red pitaya (dragon fruit).
1) Ripe Dragon fruit.................................................2) I don't know what fruit this one is!
Second stop, Bagan Lalang Gold Coast Beach, Sepang After a nice feast of dragon fruits and ice cream, we headed towards Sepang Bagan Lalang so called Goldcoast seaside. It was low tide so the sea water was nearly more than a kilometer away from the shore. There were many people braving the hot sun digging for tasty ‘kepah’ shellfish. We set out our picnic mat under a shady tree. My little daughter quietly sneaked away to a stall selling kite and bought a big bat kite. Of course she got a ‘lecture’ after doing this! I am not sure why they want to develop this place to be a tourist resort. I don’t see any toilet and bathing facilities except some run down stall. There is no proper car park and cars are allowed to go so near to the pedestrian walkway. The road leading to this tourist spot is very narrow! Furthermore, one has to walk so far out to sea during low tide to enjoy a swim, or is it deep enough to swim there? There are other more beautiful beaches elsewhere in Malaysia!
My daughter's bat kite...........................................using the kite to block some sun light! LOL!
The scenery at Bagan Lalang Gold Coast
Can you see hundreds of soap bubbles floating in the air? Third Stop - Tg Sepat Pau, Seafood and Prawn Fritters From Bagan Lalang, we moved on to Tg Sepat to eat the famous ‘pau’ (dumplings). Unfortunately, there were so many people queuing up for the pau and we decided to go for lunch in the nearby restaurant instead. We drove to the restaurants located near the jetty and it was packed with diners. Some of the patrons told us that they have to wait more than 2 hours for their food! Looked like we have to eat elsewhere! We did not manage to have our lunch here! Luckily my sister in law bought some ‘kerepek udang’ (prawn fritters) near the pau stall and it helps us to fill our hungry tummy a little bit. I forgot to take picture of the kerepek udang, but they tasted very nice and the prawn was very fresh. Yummy!
Fourth Stop - Viking Seafood Restaurant, Pengkalan Nelayan Permatang Pasir, Daerah Kuala Langat
Next stop, we headed towards Jugra and found Viking Restaurant at Pengkalan Nelayan Permatang Pasir, which is located not far away from the famous Beggar Chicken restaurant. As we sat down to order our food, the same group of people we met at Tg Sepat came in. Looks like they didn’t eat their meal too in Tg Sepat! Ha ha ha! We ordered a stir fried vegetable (Choy Tam), herbal beggar chicken, kepah (shell fish) with ginger, steamed red snapper and a pot of hot crabmeat tofu soup. The stir fried vegetable (Choy Tam) is nice but the serving is quite small. I don’t think the cook the beggar chicken using clay like the original one, because I could not smell any smoky aroma. However the chicken meat was very tender and well marinated. The Chinese herbs aroma and flavours were infused in the meat. Thumbs up! The kepah (shell fish) was cooked with ginger with a hint of chilli oil. The taste was quite good and the natural flavours of the shellfish were still intact in the flesh. The steamed red snapper was garnished with chili, spring onion, garlic, shitake mushroom and tomato. The fish is fresh but then the portion was also very small. The last dish that came was the crabmeat tofu soup. It actually tasted like shark fin soup. Nice! The total bill for five adults and three children came up to be RM106, which I think is a little bit pricey because the servings are a little too small. Anyway, at least the food in this restaurant is quite tasty! The Viking restaurant and scenery next to the restaurant!

Fifth Stop - Bukit Jugra After a nice lunch we headed towards Bukit Jugra to see the light house up there. After maneuvering our car up the steep slope for around 10 minutes we arrived at the light house which is 146metres above the sea level. It was built in 1976 and the light guides ships in The Straits of Malacca. The lighthouse itself stands at a height of 25 metres. It is a nice view from up here. We can see many swallow bird nest buildings in the low lying areas around Jugra. It looks like bird nest farming is catching up fast around this area. The buildings that house the birds are really huge! We saw a few Para gliders resting at the Para gliders platform just below the light house. Due to its’ geographical location, Jugra Hill is a favourite place for Para gliders taking off with their free flying foot launched aircraft. The number plate of their car bears Singaporean registered number. Wow, these guys drove all the way from Singapore to paraglide at Bukit Jugra. The children were getting restless after a long day and we gave Soon Beng Longan orchard a miss this round.
