Yummy Local Made Bread Stick (Roti Biskut) from SB Bakery

My wife's colleague got this packet yummy bread stick for us from an Indian motorbike breadman. I have eaten other local made bread stick before but they are not as nice as this one. Most of the ones I ate previously have rather hard texture but not this one from SB Bakery.
The bread stick is around 5" in length and around 0.5" in diameter.......errr, bread stick ah....dun think of 'something' else lorr....ha ha ha.

It is very crunchy, light and  have a really nice fresh baked bread aroma. Taste really good with my morning coffee!
For Rm1.50 (USD 0.50) per packet, it is really worth the price.

The ingredients printed on the packed says the bread sticks are made from wheat flour, sugar, butter, salt, yeast, milk and a little colouring. Mmmmm, colouring?...I don't think it needs colouring...lol!

SB Bakery address in the packet stated as :
No 5, Jalan Perisa 2,

Mun Heng Bakery, Sg Lembing Kuantan Biskut Kelapa (Coconut Biscuit, Vegetarian)

This is one of my favourite Sin Guan Hoe and I would buy a few packs whenever I visit Kuantan. Biskut Kelapa (coconut biscuit) is produced by Mun Heng Bakery. The main ingredients are wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil, sesame seed and coconut. I have never visited the bakery but from the texture and nice aromatic taste, it looks like the biscuit is baked using traditional oven. I bought the biscuit from one of Sin Kee Hung outlets which sells all kinds of dried seafood products. It cost RM4 (USD 0.90) per packet of 300 gms. The coconut biscuit is very crunchy, fresh and tasty. It goes along well with my cuppa of “kopi o” (black coffee).

Tian Hup Seng Melaka Heong Peah (Biskut Wangi, Fragrant Biscuit)

My sister in law gave me this box of Heong Peah from Melaka. I have never eaten Heong Peah from Melaka before but this one taste as good as the biscuit from the northern Malaysian states. The individually packed heong peah (biskut wangi, fragrant biscuit, Beh Teh Soh) is flaky and has nice sweet salty fillings. Sorry, I forgot to take photo of the biscuit because by the time I realised, it was too late! I ate the last piece already! ha ha ha Here is the address on the box......buy one for me if you drop by there, ya!

Flat Heong Peah without Sugar Fillings – Sin Guan Hoe Teluk Intan

Flat Heong Peah without molasses filling above and normal ones with filling below
My post about Sin Guan Hoe Heong Peah refers. The normal Heong Peah (aka Beh Teh Soh in Penang) has molasses filling inside it. Recently, my wife’s colleague bought some heong peah for us from Sing Guan Hoe Teluk Intan, which are flat and do not have any molasses filling inside. Although they look like normal biscuit, the taste is rather unique. You can imagine eating a normal heong peah skin without the sugar. These flat heong peah have very nice aroma and crispy as well compared with the one with sugar filling. Sure taste good with a cup of Kopi O (Black Coffee)!

Leng Kak Piah (Bra Biscuits) aka Biskut Telinga

In Hokkien dialect, these biscuit are known as ‘Leng Kak Piah’ which literally means Bra Biscuits. Most people would call them biscuit telinga, which means Ear Biscuits in Malay Language. The base ingredients for making these biscuits are wheat flour, sugar, salt, vegetable oil, eggs and spices. Biscuit telinga has a little hard crunchy texture. These aromatic and savoury biscuit are manufactured locally. It has been some time ago since I last ate Leng Kak Piah, so I bought a packet from the Pasar Malam (night market) recently. They are sold at RM5 for three packets. It is nice to chew on this snack while watching TV. So do you think the biscuit looks like Bra or Ear or Avatar Navi tribe ear maybe? Ha ha ha!

Sin Teo Hiang Pandan Flavour Tambun Biscuit (green bean filled biscuit, Tau Sar Peah), Bukit Mertajam, Butterworth

Look at the product list written on the box. I don't know that there is 'Teochew Sushi', ha ha ha! Must be those soft gooey type of candies.
My Father in Law gave me this nice Tambun Biscuit when he came to my house for a visit. He bought it fresh from the biscuit factory in Bukit Mertajam, Butterworth. This box of tambun biscuit came in two flavours; original and pandan (screwpine). I love all types of tambun biscuit including these greenish little ones which have pandan (screw pine) flavours added. There is also a tinge of sesame oil aroma and the sweetness of the biscuit is just right. These biscuits sure taste good a cup of hot Chinese tea! This is the address that was written on the box. Teluk Intan Sin Guan Hoe Heong Peah Biscuit

Teluk Intan is one of the food havens in Malaysia. I gave a plate of pizza to my wife’s colleague the other day and she gave me a packet of Teluk Intan Heong Peah when she returned me the plate. In Penang we called it Beh Teh Soh. Yup, she brought it all the way from Teluk Intan and the heong peah is really fresh. The outer crust is very flaky and the sesame seeds gave it extra aroma! I love the slight salty maltose sugar inside which has the right sweetness that suits my taste buds. The ingredients listed on the packet are wheat flour, maltose, sesame seed, margarine, vegetable oil, salt, sugar and shallots. Maybe I will try to make this next time! I ate 5 pcs at one go.......LOL! Here is the address I found on the packet. Kedai Biskut (Biscuit Shop) Sin Guan Hoe 23, Jalan Pasir Bedamar, 36000, Teluk Intan, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia Tel : 056215094

Cookie Hut, Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong – Kaya Kok

Tucked in the makeshift stalls near the place where I always go for my favourite Stingray Curry and Yong Tau Foo, lies a small production outlet for cakes, pastries and cookies. Although the outlet is very small, Cookie Hut distributes their product all over KL and Kepong. You will see that their workers are forever very busy making and baking various types of confectioneries. I bought a packet of 5 freshly made kaya kok (coconut milk custard pastry) for RM4.50. They are shaped like curry puff. The kaya is thick and rich in flavours but not too sweet almost like home made ones and the pastry is flaky. It tastes real good with a cup of hot coffee or tea! I saw that they also have Shat Kei Ma (Crispy Egg Flour with Molasses Biscuit) and peanut cookies on the display counter for sale. Will check out the shat kei ma.....next round! Cute Animal Figures Biscuits

I bought these cute biscuits for my little toddler who took some time to look at the animal figures before eating them. Well, I guess he is curious about the animal shape in the biscuits! My eldest son sorted out the ten types of animals like owl, bird, cat, tortoise, rhinoceros, chicken, swan or maybe duck, elephant, fish and rabbit on the plate. My mom would buy this biscuits for my elder son whenever we visited her during the early days when she was stronger and able to go to the wet market all by herself. How time flies, I can still remember vividly the little biscuit and fruit shops in the Butterworth New Ferry Road wet market that sells this type of biscuit and I would be as happy as a lark whenever my mom buys some for me. These rows of shops are no longer there except the structure that hosts the wet market which is still being occupied by morning market traders. It seems like with a blink of an eye, my mom and dad are already in their eighties and I would go back to visit them as often as I could so that they will get to see their grandchildren. Maybe I will get some of these animal figures biscuits in Butterworth and compare the taste with the one I bought from KL. My little toddler will be the judge of the animal biscuits tasting. LOL! Mini Rempeyek (Malaysian Traditional Peanut Cookies)

Occasionally, while watching my favourite show in AFC, I would be munching away snacks like rempeyek (Malaysian Traditional Peanut Cookies) or maybe some kacang (nuts). Rempeyek round flat base is made from rice flour with some spice like cumin, coriander and fennel added to it. Then toasted peanuts and anchovies (ikan bilis) would be placed on top of the flat disc like dough which is around 3 inches in diameter. This is then deep fried in hot oil until crispy. Some rempeyek has thin crust but some has thick ones. The thick crust ones normally have peanuts toppings and the thin crust rempeyek has peanuts and anchovies (ikan bilis) toppings. I bought this mini size rempeyek from the biscuits vendor I frequent at Kepong Baru Market. It is very fresh and not oily. This mini size rempeyek has only peanuts toppings. Since it comes in bite size, I just pop the whole piece in the mouth without have to worry about scraps falling all over the place. Yum, yum.....I am going to eat my crunchy and tasty rempeyek now! Cheers!

Shat Kei Ma (Crispy Egg Flour with Molasses Biscuit) bought From Kepong Baru Wet Market

Ipoh is famous for its’ Shat Kei Ma biscuits. Nowadays you can buy Shat Kei Ma, virtually in most places in Malaysia. Shat Kei Ma (Crispy Egg Flour with Molasses Biscuit) is made from eggs, salt, sugar, baking powder and flour, shaped into flat strips that are fried until crispy. Then they are bound together by molasses and then made into blocks. In the olden days, lard is actually added into the Shat Kei Ma. I am not sure the one I bought from Kepong Baru wet market has lard added or not but it is very tasty, crispy and fresh! Eight blocks of these Shat Kei Ma cost me RM3.30. One thing about Shat Kei Ma, once you start eating, you can hardly stop! So, get a packet Shat Kei Ma and try it out when you visit Ipoh, next time! Malaysian Attap Chi (attap palm fruit) Biscuits (Gem Bisquits)

I remembered as young boy, Gem Biscuit was one of my favourite snacks. I used to buy them from the grocery shop at my neighbourhood or get my mom to buy a packet of it from the wet market. Anyway, as a kid I would always try to tag along with my mom whenever she goes to the wet market, so that I can check out the fish monger stalls for any live seafood or what ever animals that are alive out there. I love to keep pets, so sometime I will find small little baby horse shoe crab in heaps of shrimps. I will collect them and bring them home. Then I would make some saline solution from salt and water, tasting it at the same time to see whether it match the sea water saltiness. Horse shoe crab can survive quite well in water with different salinity. Most of the time my baby horse shoe crab cannot survive very long but I managed to observe some of them changing their hard armour shell (skins) a few times! Oh oh, sorry I got side tracked a little, back to the original topic of Gen Biscuits. I am not sure why we call it Attap Chi (Hokkien dialect) in my hometown. It has got nothing to do with Pua Chu Kang, Attap Chi (Attap Palm fruits) that his mother put in to the ice kacang (shaven ice with sweet syrup). The base of Gem Biscuit is made from flour and it is top with brightly coloured icing sugar. If you ever visit any biscuit factory or bakeries that produce gem biscuit, get the owner to show you how they make the gem biscuits. The automated machine that produced the gem biscuit is just awesome. The process is very fast and you can see that they make thousands of these in just a couple of minutes. Just pop one in your mouth, you will taste the crispy based and the sweet icing at the same time. Yummy, I am going to eat my gems now! Sheng Hiang Tambun Biscuit (Biskut Kacang Hijau, Tau Sar Peah), Penang

Tau Sar Peah aka Tambun Biscuit in air tight packaging

Why most of the Tau Sar Peah boxes looks similar?......make it more funky lah! Map and address to Sheng Hiang My in laws gave me a box of Sheng Hiang Tambun biscuit when I went back to Butterworth recently. I like to eat tambun biscuit but I never tried this brand of tambun biscuit (tau sah peah) before. The packaging sure looks like some of the famous brands of tambun biscuit. It came in a nice box and inside they are packed into four in plastic tubes. Well, the taste? It has its own unique taste, a little bit creamier than the usual ones I had and the aroma is nice too. Actually overall it taste quite good. I think I will drop by the shop on my next trip to Penang. Here is the address of Sheng Hiang that I copied from the box. Pong Piah and Hiau Piah (Chinese Biscuits)

My in laws bought these Pong Piah and Hiau Piah (known as these names in Penang Hokkien dialect) in Butterworth for my family recently. I really love to eat these types of biscuit

Pong Piah is also known as Roti Timbu in Bahasa Malaysia. It is almost similar to the Heong Peng but Pong Piah is very much softer and has more flaky texture. It has a creamy sort of taste and the melted sugar filling inside is clearer. The main ingredients for making Pong Piah are wheat flour, sugar, vegetable oil and wheat molasses. My friend, Amy told me that in Penang, for ladies during confinement, they would break a small hole on top of the Pong Piah and pour an egg into the cavity. Then the pong piah is fried slowly in a wok with sesame oil. Mmmmmmm, tasty!

Pong Piah
At first glance, the Hiau Piah looks like Tambun biscuits (Tau Sar Peng). The difference is that the Hiau Piah has a much harder skins, not flaky and the filling inside is made from brown sugar. It is a little bit too sweet with all the brown sugar filling inside but the aromatic brown sugar gave the Hiau Piah its’ unique taste. This is one of my favourite biscuits too!

Beh Teh Soh (Roti Gula Putih, Hiong Piah, White Sugar Biscuit)

This type of biscuit is known as Beh Teh Soh in Penang. The outer layer of the biscuit is crispy and the filling is made from sweet molasses. The main ingredients are wheat flour, white sugar, wheat molasses, salt, vegetable oil, sesame seed and shallots. I love to eat Beh Teh Soh as my tea time snack. It goes down well with Pu Err tea.

These Beh Teh Soh are from Butterworth. They are priced at RM3.80 for 10 pieces.

These Hiong Piah are from Perak, Yee Hup. Very crispy and contains less sugar inside. I love the taste!

Nice packaging but pricey, around RM1 per piece sold in a packet of 10s. Penang Roti Tapai Biscuits

Don’t let the looks of the biscuit deceive you. This is actually a very tasty biscuit and I think it is quite popular in the northern states of Malaysia. Not many bakeries are making this type of biscuit anymore. I bought a packet of Roti Tapai Biscuits from Chai Leng Park, Butterworth wet market recently. It has a nice aroma and taste a bit sweet. Dip it in a cup of hot coffee, the result......yummy! So, remember to grab a packet of Roti Tapai whenever you visit the Malaysian northern states. Yummy, aromatic Roti Tapai Biscuits...................One packet RM2 only!
