Plain Type Bak Kut Teh, Restaurant Ye Xin Ge, People’s Park, PJ

If you love plain soup bak kut teh without all the strong Chinese herbal smell, then this old timer Ye Sin Ge bak kut teh suits your taste. I remembered that I ate this bak kut teh in their old location in Section 14 once many years ago when I was a junior engineer working nearby there. Now the old location has been taken over by TGIF. Ye Xin Ge is located by a row of shoplots on your left just after the Kelana Jaya LRT station if you are travelling towards Sunway. We dropped by this restaurant after taking the kids to the National Science Centre in Kiara. It has been a long time since I last ate here. It was the 1st day of January 2010, a New Year day and the restaurant was not packed at all. Maybe all the late night revelers are still sleeping. We ordered a bowl of mixed bak kut teh, 2 bowls of yau char kueh, braised mushroom (tung ku), vegetable, sour vegetable soup and tau pok (fried bean curd). The bak kut teh is served using a porcelain bowl which is the main signature of this restaurant. As expected soup is plain but favourful and without the strong herbal smell. We ate all the pork and innards except the pig tail which is rather oily. Nice, they still manage to retain the standard all these years. The total bill of for all the dishes, 7 bowls of rice and tea came up to be RM83. Restoran Yi Xin Ge23, Jln SS4D/2, People's Park, Petaling Jaya. (Open 6.30am - 9pm) Map to Restaurant Ye Xin Ge

Chick Feet Kut Teh, Anyone Interested?

I would always ask for extra chicken feet from the chicken stall owner in Kepong Baru wet market whenever I buy chicken from him. The friendly boss would obliged by giving me whole bunch of them! It is real nice to chew on the tendons of the chicken feet. Chicken feet is a must have whenever I ate at dim sum restaurants. My friend told me that it is good for my joints but I am not really sure whether it is true or not. Hope that it can cure my knee injuries sustained during my half marathon running days! Anyway, I decided to throw in some of the chicken feet into my Chick Kut Teh. I had a nice meal of Chick Feet Kut Teh with cili padi (bird eye chili) in soya sauce!

Seng Lee Claypot Bak Kut Teh, Bukit Maluri, Kepong, Kuala Lumpur

I have passed by the Seng Lee Claypot Bak Kut Teh stall many times but have not eaten the food this stall has to offer. Every time, whenever I am in this area, I always ended up eating at Tuck Kei Dim Sum Restaurant. My son and I had our dinner at this Bak Kut Teh stall in Bukit Maluri recently. We ordered Claypot Bak Kut Teh, Tau Pok, Yau Char Kwai and vegetable (sawi). The Bak Kut Teh soup is not the strong herbal type, it might not be the best BKT but the taste is ok for me. It was served with generous amount of shitake mushroom. The Tau Fu Pok is tender and full of flavours, having soaked up all the bak kut teh soup. The vegetable portion is quite large for one person. It is crunchy and the fried shallots provide extra flavours to this simple dish. My son ate most of the Yau Char Kwai (Chinese crullers). He loves dipping them into the bak kut teh soup. Overall the bill including 2 iced Chinese Pu Err teas came up to be RM19.80. The price is quite reasonable! No wonder, this place has a good dinner crowd every night! Kedai Kopi Ijok, Setia Alam, Bak Kut Teh (Chinese Herbal Pork Soup)

NOTE : As at 25/2/11, I noticed that Ijok Coffee shop location has been replaced by another food operator. Somehow, one morning I ended up in Setia Alam, Shah Alam for an early appointment. The meeting ended at 11 am and I decided to check out some of the restaurants around this area. The commercial area here which used to be very quiet is now bustling with activities because many shops had opened for business. I went into Kedai Kopi Ijok and immediately noticed the Bak Kut Teh stall. It has been quite some time I had a good Bak Kut Teh. The stall must be new, judging from the pots and utensils the owner is using. I ordered a bowl of clay pot bak kut teh with lean meat and pork ribs only. The Bak Kut Teh tasted real good, a little bit of a home cook one and had a strong Chinese herbal aroma; the way I like it. The fu chuk soaked up all the bak kut teh soup sweetness and I love to every bit of it. The BKT has generous portion of pork ribs and lean meat. Nothing beats a morning brunch of Bak Kut Teh and a glass of Kopi Peng (Iced Coffee). The price I paid for the Bak Kut Teh was RM9.40 and Iced Coffee, RM 1.40. Yummy, yummy Bak Kut Teh! Kedai Kopi Ijok, Setia Alam, Shah Alam.....................All "habis", nothing left! Authentic Bak Kut Teh Recipe – Pork Herbal Soup (Non Halal)

Use this A1 herbs or use the one on the 2nd pics which I bought from Chinese Medicine Shop Pork trotters Bak Kut Teh Bak Kut Teh is one of my favourite foods. You can either use factory pre packed Bak Kut Teh(A1 in picture above) or get the local Chinese Medicine Shop to pack the herbs for you. You can actually add in pork ribs, intestines or other part of the pork meat if you like. I used pork trotters for this dish.

 Ingredients
1) Pre packed Bak Kut Teh spices, 1 packet (A1 comes with 2 sachets, Use one sachet for 5 bowls of water)
2) Pork trotters, 1/2 , cut into large pieces
3) Fried Fluffy Bean Curd (Toufu Pok), 10 pcs
4) Dried Shitake Mushroom, soaked in water to soften, 5 pcs
5) Young Corns, 10 pcs, cut half
6) Fu Chuk (Fried bean curd), 10 pcs
7) Garlic, 1 bulb
8) Oyster sauce, 2 table spoons
9) Light Soya Sauce, 7 table spoons
10) Thick Soya Sauce, ½ teaspoon
11) Enoki Mushroom, 1 packet, cut off the roots and wash to clean
12) 5 bowls of water 13) Salt to taste
14) *Lycium berries (Kei chi), around 1 table spoon (optional, added for extra flavour)
15) *Tong Kwai, 2 pcs (optional, for extra flavour)

*Note: I normally add these two Chinese herbs if I am using Factory pre packed BKT spices.

Put 5 bowls of water into a pot and bring to a boil. Add in the pre packed spices, Kei chi (optional), Tong Kwai(optional), pork trotters, shitake mushroom and garlic. Boil in slow fire for around 1 hour to soften the pork trotter’s tendons and meat. Then add in light soya sauce, thick soya sauce, and oyster sauce. Put in the young corns, tofu pok, fu chuk and salt to taste. You can add leafy vegetable and enoki mushroom before serving so that they will remain crunchy. BKT is best eaten with steamed rice and You Char Kueh (Chinese Crullers). Use bird eye chili and chopped raw garlic with soya sauce as dipping sauce. Here is the log of all my activities. 6.15 am – Left home 7.00 am – Reached Puchong 1) Breakfast – Bak Kut Teh at Telok Pulai Klang Restaurant in Puchong The wet BKT- Very small serving......................The dry BKT with lady fingers I ordered one dry and wet Bak Kut Teh. The wet bak kut teh here is of a milder version. The dry one is not very dark but full of taste. The dry version is cooked with dry chilies, dried cuttlefish and dark soya sauce. 2 bowls of rice (RM2), one dry Bak Kut Teh (RM9), one wet BKT (RM9) and a pot of Tork Shau Heong Tea (RM3) cost me RM23. The serving of BKT is quite small, a bit on the pricy side. Address: No 23G, Jalan ½, Taman Industri Pusat Bandar Puchong, Bt. 12 ½, Jalan Puchong, 47100 Puchong, Selangor. Note : Telok Pulai Restaurant have already moved to a new location, shoplot at the back row of the old restaurant, facing the main road. The signboard is now red in colour. Parking for first 15 minutes in this building is free. LOL 1.30 pm – Arrived in Sin Hup Seng Restaurant, SS21 in Seapark PJ. I had a lunch date here. 2) Lunch – Penang Curry Mee (noodles) – Sin Hup Seng Restaurant Penang Curry Mee I ordered two bowls of Penang curry mee. The gravy is nice. The more chilies you add in the nicer it will be, so remember to ask for more chili. Ok, the curry mee pass my test. The stall also sells Penang Prawn Mee, Kueh Teow Soup and Fried Kueh Teow. So, I went over check out another stall in that area that I used to frequent, Jawa Mee. 3) Dinner – Jawa Mee – Ya-Ka- Fook Restaurant The tasty Jawa Mee, real big serving! Sorry, picture is not clear! A pretty lady distracted me The restaurant was packed with diners. I managed to find a seat by sharing a table with a lone diner. The chubby uncle that runs the stall is very generous. At RM3.50 per plate, the serving is rather large. This area is populated by students, so you can find many foods stall that serve large serving of food at very reasonable price. Food(NV) - Dry Bak Kut Teh -Restaurant Shun Heng, Sunway Mas PJ-Non Halal

Dry Bah Kut Teh Restaurant in Sunway Mas
Heong Pin Tea, goes well with Bak Kut Teh
My lunch buddy, Chang J.P., showing the thumbs up.
The dry bak kut teh. Bon appetit!
Ladies fingers(okra) with oyster sauce.
Yam rice and yau char kueh(chinese crullers)
Nothing left! Sapu habis, ha ha.
This is my sixth visit to Shun Heng Bak Kut Teh Restaurant. The taste of the dry bak kut teh is fantastic and I fell in love with it ever since a friend of mine, whose office is just across the road, bought me there. This time I brought along my buddy, Chang JP to let him try the dry bak kut teh. We ordered a pot of dry bak kut teh, oyster sauce ladies fingers (okra), yau char kueh, yam rice, white rice and of course the heong pin Chinese tea that goes well with bak kut teh. The dry bak kut teh is served with soup separated. Dry chilies and cuttle fish (sotong kering, yau yee in Cantonese) that are added to the dry bak kut teh made the aroma very special. On top of that, the dry cuttle fish also made the dish full of natural sweetness. I rarely take ladies fingers unless with sambal belacan(prawn paste chili) but the oyster sauce ladies fingers(okra) served here is good. The sauce combination is just nice, not too sweet and not too salty. As usual we dip the yau char kueh into the soup provided. One thing I like about this restaurant is that the soups are provided individually and they top it up pretty fast when on request. Other dishes like pig trotters and the normal wet bak kut teh are also available here. The restaurant is clean and the place is comfortable. Very suitable if you are bringing your family there or want to have a business discussion over lunch. But make sure you invite me, Ok! Sounds like a Tai Koh lah! Ha ha. Shun Heng is the branch of the Taman Sentosa Klang Bak Kut Teh. Operation Hours:weekdays - 9am - 3pm / 6pm - 9pm weekends - 8am - 3pm / 5.30pm - 9pm Off day mostly on alternate Monday.
