When I asked my daughter what she wants to eat for supper, she told me cheekily that she wanted curry mee. She knew that it is quite impossible for me to cook up something that complicated for supper. However, she was in for a surprise when I managed to prepare a very simplified version of curry me using all the ingredients that I have within 30 minutes. First I put two pots water to boil at the same time, one to cook the bihun (rice vermicelli) and one for the curry mee soup. I recycled the bihun hot water and used it to make a hard boil egg. While waiting for the water to boil, I prepare the shallots and serai (lemongrass) from my garden. For the creamy taste, I used cheese as a substitute for coconut milk (santan). So, here is another quickie meal recipe.
Quickie Curry Mee
Ingredients
Prawns, 3 pcs with shell
Cheese, 1 piece (or you can use evaporated milk)
Water, 2 rice bowls
Oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon
Curry powder, 2 table spoons mixed with a little water \
Chilly Powder, 1 teaspoon (optional) \
Shallots, 3 pcs, chopped finely
Serai, 1 pc, chopped finely \
Salt to taste
Egg, 1 pc, hard boiled and cut into two
Long beans, 2 pcs, cut into 1 inch length
Bihun (rice vermicelli, I don’t have yellow mee in stock) , 2 servings, cook shortly in hot water to soften
Bring water for soup to a boil and add in the prawns. Add in the oyster sauce, cheese, long beans and salt to taste. Let the soup boil for a short while and turn off the fire. Heat up wok and put in a little vegetable oil. Sautéed the serai and shallots until golden brown. Then add in the curry paste and chilly powder. Stir fry the mixture until fragrant. Put the fried mixture into the soup. Put some of the soften bihun on a bowl and pour the soup over it. Garnish with hard boil egg and serve. ‘Daddy’s Curry Mee is ready’, I called out. My daughter didn’t believe me until she sees it for herself! Ha ha ha!

Pontian Wantan Noodles (Mee) at Sungai Wang Plaza, Jalan Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur
Curry Mee (Curry Laksa). Opps, forgot to take photo before eating! LOL!
Fried wantons and my daughter's favourite strawberry snow ice. See all the ice sheet folds? Just like tissue papers! After a day out shopping, we decided to have our dinner at Sg Wang Plaza before driving home. We found this wantan noodle shop on the 3rd floor in the shopping complex and decided to check it out. I am not sure whether there is an original Pontian Wantan Mee in Pontian, Johore or not but this restaurant looked decent to me. I ordered a bowl of curry laksa (Curry Mee, RM5, and USD1.50) and my daughter had the Wantan Mee Soup (RM4.80, USD 1.45). For side dishes we ordered a plate of fried wanton (RM4, USD 1.20). My daughter wanted to try the Strawberry Snow Ice (RM3.90, USD1.18), so I ordered one for her and one Kopi O ice (Iced Coffee, RM1.70, USD0.50) for myself. The curry laksa (curry mee) is creamy and I like the mint like minced leaves the added to it. It actually tastes a little like Sarawak laksa minus the herbs and they use thick type of rice vermicelli in it. The Wanton Mee soup is nice too. I took a sip of the soup and found it to be quite tasty. I love chewing on the crunchy fried wanton but I think that the size is rather small. Anyway, I finished the whole plate in a jiffy! LOL! My daughter loves the Strawberry Snow Ice dessert so much. The ice is very fine and they are carved it as thin as a piece of tissue paper. In fact the whole serving looks like pieces of tissues folded together. It melts gently in your mouth! Nice! So in total we paid RM19.40 (no tax!) for all the food. This is reasonable price for an outlet located in prime Kuala Lumpur Golden Triangle area.

Jaya Noodle House
After a few drinks with my old buddy in a pub near SS2, we went over to Jaya Noodle House for dinner. This eatery moved to Jaya One from its’ old location in Jaya Supermarket in SS14. This restaurant has been operating in Jaya Supermarket building for quite a long time. My friend is regular customer in this restaurant and he recommended that I try the curry mee. We ordered two bowls of curry mee and one plate of fried taugeh (bean sprout) with salted fish.
The curry mee gravy is nice and creamy. Penang style of curry mee is my favourite but this southern type of curry mee tasted is ok to me. The chili, when added to the curry mee soup gave it an extra kick. Yummy!
I like the fried taugeh very much. The salted fish is very crunchy and the wok hei (smoky) smell of the dish is very appetising. One bowl of curry mee cost RM7.90 (tax not included) and the taugeh (beansprout) with salted fish cost RM12.00 (tax not included). Well this is the price to pay for a well air conditioned, clean and ambient restaurant. Jaya Noodle house is a good place to have a family meal.

Three of my Favourite Hawker Stalls at Great Wellesley Food Court, Taman Chai Leng, Prai
This food court is located at the former Chai Leng Park Great Wellesley cinema. It is actually an extension of the cinema building. The three stalls that serve my favourite food are the curry mee, tua pan (wat tan hor in Cantonese, braised fried kueh teow) and char kueh teow.
I ‘tar pau’ these for my late night supper when I was back in Butterworth recently.
Curry Mee
I have been eating the curry mee from this stall for the last 28 years. The owner of the stall has since passed away and his wife took over the business. I have acquired the taste of the curry mee from this stall and it is a must have whenever I go back to Butterworth! It is the best I had so far!
Tua Pan
This is hor fun Cantonese style and in Penang we call it tua pan because the kueh teow that we used are wider than the normal hor fun. The tua pan in Penang is real tasty because the hor fun is fried to perfection in hot iron wok and the starchy soup is yummy
Char Kueh Teow
This is Mr. Eng’s Char Kueh Teow that I featured in my post http://peteformation.blogspot.com/2008/10/kim-sun-great-wellesley-foodcourt-chai.html.

Chow Kee Restaurant, Manjalara
Chow Kee Restaurant started business more than a year ago but I haven’t tried their food until recently. It is a bit further inside from the other group of restaurants around this area, so you can expect it not to be so crowded. I was there with my kids for breakfast and we ordered curry mee, kueh teow soup and jawa mee.
The curry mee is of the creamy KL type and a cross of Penang type, taste ok. The kueh teow soup in nice and the taste surely beats many other kueh teow soups in KL. It is served with generous amount of vegetables.
The Jawa Mee also has a generous amount of toppings like keropok, vegetable, cucumber strips, fried tau kwa (tofu), shallots and ground peanuts. Overall taste is ok; maybe a little extra salt would improve the taste a bit.
Good place for to have breakfast, very friendly restaurant owner, customers and stall operators. Everyone there seems to know each other very well. I will be back here to try the Chee Yoke Fun; recommended by the owner.

Authentic Penang Curry Mee Recipe
Everyone loves the taste of Penang curry mee. It is also one of children’s favourite foods. The Curry mee hawkers put a lot of flavour enhancers in the soup that they sell. I don’t like to use food flavour enhancers in my cooking. The secret to a good Penang curry mee is the chili. Nothing beats a home cook curry mee. Here is the Penang curry mee recipe.
Some of the ingredients...........................................The Curry Mee chili
The soup. I did not use pig's blood, cockles and sotong as my kids don't like these food. Instead, I used fish ball and fish cake.
Penang Curry Mee Recipe
1) Curry Mee Chili
Blend this
-Shallots, 5 pcs
-Dried Prawns, 2 table spoons, soaked in water to soften
-1 stalk of serai (lemongrass)
Chilli paste, 150gms
Salt, 1 teaspoon
Curry Powder, 3 table spoons
Belachan, 1/2 table spoon (optional)
Sautéed the blended chili and dried prawns using 8 table spoons of oil until fragrant. Add chilli paste, curry powder, belachan, salt and curry powder. Stir using low heat until fragrant.
2) Soup
Ingredient
6 bowls of water
Chicken carcass
½ a coconut milk(add more if you want like the soup to be more creamy)
2 stalks of serai (lemongrass), bashed
Salt to taste
2 table spoon of the above curry mee chili
Prawns, 300 gms
Toufu pok (deep fried tofu), 10pcs, cut into half
Make the soup stock using chicken bones or carcass and add in lemongrass. Use 6 bowls of water. Put in the long beans, 2 table spoon of curry mee chili and add in ½ a coconut milk. Add in prawns. Add salt to taste. (Make sure the soup is salty enough so that the curry mee will taste better when you add it to the noodles). Add tofu pok before serving.
3) Mee, bihun and taugeh
Yellow Mee, 300gms, blanched with boiling water and drained
Rice vermicelli (bihun, 1/4 packet), blanced with boiling water and drained
Beansprout(Taugeh), 300 gms, blanched with boiling water and drained
4)Garnishing
Cockles, 500 gms, blanched and shelled

Food – Food/Work Marathon – In Olympic mood! (Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh in Puchong , Penang Curry Mee in PJ, Jawa Mee in Sri Rampai)
Yesterday, I started my day early. Woke up at 5.30 am and left the house at 6.15 am for an appointment in Putrajaya. Here is the log of all my activities.
6.15 am – Left home
7.00 am – Reached Puchong
1) Breakfast – Bak Kut Teh at Telok Pulai Klang Restaurant in Puchong
The wet BKT- Very small serving......................The dry BKT with lady fingers
I ordered one dry and wet Bak Kut Teh. The wet bak kut teh here is of a milder version. The dry one is not very dark but full of taste. The dry version is cooked with dry chilies, dried cuttlefish and dark soya sauce. 2 bowls of rice (RM2), one dry Bak Kut Teh (RM9), one wet BKT (RM9) and a pot of Tork Shau Heong Tea (RM3) cost me RM23. The serving of BKT is quite small, a bit on the pricy side.
Address: No 23G, Jalan ½, Taman Industri Pusat Bandar Puchong,
Bt. 12 ½, Jalan Puchong, 47100 Puchong, Selangor.
Note : Telok Pulai Restaurant have already moved to a new location, shoplot at the back row of the old restaurant, facing the main road. The signboard is now red in colour.
Taman Industri Pusat Bandar Puchong Map:
12 noon – Left Putrajaya
1 pm – Arrived in Pudu Plaza to drop off some document. I ‘cabut’ (left) from the place quickly. Parking for first 15 minutes in this building is free. LOL
1.30 pm – Arrived in Sin Hup Seng Restaurant, SS21 in Seapark PJ. I had a lunch date here.
2) Lunch – Penang Curry Mee (noodles) – Sin Hup Seng Restaurant
Penang Curry Mee
I ordered two bowls of Penang curry mee. The gravy is nice. The more chilies you add in the nicer it will be, so remember to ask for more chili. Ok, the curry mee pass my test. The stall also sells Penang Prawn Mee, Kueh Teow Soup and Fried Kueh Teow.
Address: Sin Hup Seng Restaurant

2 pm - Dropped by the Commissioner for Oath office in 2, Jalan SS2/61, SS2, 47000 Petaling JayaTel 78772495 HP 0123991081 (new location), to get two documents signed. I can hear my Branch Manager LOL, 2 new recruits, Yay!
3 pm – Decided to pay my business partner baby products shop in SS2 a visit. Address is 39-A, Jln SS2/55, 47300, Petaling Jaya. We had a discussion on current stock market situation over a teh tarik in Pelita Restaurant. Sorry, forgot to take pictures of the restaurant.
4.30 pm – Another business appointment in Taman Bahagia, PJ.
6.30 pm – Headed to Ulu Klang for my next appointment. Since Jalan Genting Klang is all jammed up I took short cut though Taman Sri Rampai. Since I am in the area, I decided to drop by in Taman Sri Rampai to eat my favourite Char Kueh Teow. Arrrrh, the stall is closed. So, I went over check out another stall in that area that I used to frequent, Jawa Mee.
3) Dinner – Jawa Mee – Ya-Ka- Fook Restaurant
The tasty Jawa Mee, real big serving! Sorry, picture is not clear! A pretty lady distracted me
The restaurant was packed with diners. I managed to find a seat by sharing a table with a lone diner. The chubby uncle that runs the stall is very generous. At RM3.50 per plate, the serving is rather large. This area is populated by students, so you can find many foods stall that serve large serving of food at very reasonable price. The Jawa mee is garnished with sesame seed, fried shallots, fried tofu, fried prawn crackers, vegetable and boiled potatoes. Anyway I am really proud of myself for being able to finish all of it. Downed everything with a glass of iced coffee. Yum Yum.

7.30 pm – Continued my journey to Bukit Antarabangsa, UK, hah hah… Ulu Klang. Drat, I missed the turn from MRR2. Hey City Hall, please replace the sign board! Have to drive on further to make a U turn. Why can’t the contractors put up proper sign board and hazard lights when they are upgrading the road? I nearly went on to the wrong side of the road. Luckily, I saw the faded painted arrow sign on the road. Gosh! When I arrived at Burger King, Bukit Antarabangsa, I saw my good friend, WY. Lee had just parked his car. We finished our discussion at 9.30 pm
The nice Burger King Restaurant in Bukit Antarabangsa, UK
9.30 pm – Back on the road, MRR 2, I called another buddy for supper but he is not available. So, I decided to call it a day and headed on home. I passed through the cracked area in MRR2. Luckily it did not collapse, or else I won’t be here writing this today! LOL
Reached home at 10.15pm, a very good and fruitful day! Hit the sack at 12midnight.

The Curry Mee Stall
Wan Tan Mee from another stall in the restaurant which my son tried. He says it is Ok, but I think it is a little bit too sweet. Kids might like it.

Yau char kwai from a nearby roadside stall. Try dipping it into the curry mee gravy. Ohh La la...
If you miss Penang Curry Mee and Lam Mee, head to Desa Aman Puri (near Wangsa Permai, Kepong). It is located at a corner shoplot, next to the famous crab for RM18 per kg restaurant, Tak Fok. A husband and wife team operates this stall. They used to sell prawn mee and jawa mee but have since stopped because they just cannot cope with the orders during peak hours. The more chilli you add to the curry mee the better the taste will be, because like all the other Penang type of curry mee, the soup is quite mild. The chilli which contain a mixture of kerisek (fried grated coconut), shallots and probably some secret ingredients add some ‘real kick’ to the soup. I like my curry mee with lots of Tau Pok (fried bean curd).
This stall also sells Penang Lam Mee which goes well with the special lam mee chilli (a bit like a dry version of chicken rice chilli).
My son tried the Wan Tan Mee from another stall in this restaurant. He says it taste ok, but I think it is a bit on the sweet side. Maybe that's why kids like it.
There is a Chap Fan (Economy rice) here that have a good variety of dishes (I counted them, almost 50 types. Start selling early too, around 10 am). Maybe I will try the Chap Fan next time. My stomach was already full after finishing a bowl of Lam Mee and Curry Mee.
