Thian Heong Roast Pork and Char Siew Rice, Cheras
I went to Cheras Leisure Mall for an appointment the other day and I took the opportunity to drop by Thian Heong again to eat the Char Siew/Siew Yoke Rice. I have not been back here for almost a year already and the place still looks the same, except I don’t like the floor which is too slippery.
Anyway I ordered a plate of char siew and siew yoke (roast pork) rice. For side dishes I opted for a small bowl of sweet and sour Chap Suet soup. The roast pork and char siew tasted ok. The chili sauce is spicy and nice, taste good with the roast pork. I don’t really quite like the Chap suet soup because it is a little too sweet. The chef did not manage to get the sourness and sweetness right. I finished my lunch with a glass of iced herbal tea. All these cost me RM9.60. Reasonable price?

My Second Attempt at Making Crispy Roast Pork - Yay, successful!

This is my second attempt in making Crispy Roast Pork. The last roast pork I made did not turn out that well because I couldn’t make the skin crispy. (see post http://peteformation.blogspot.com/2008/11/my-first-attempt-to-make-chinese-crispy.html)Anyway I found a nice large slab of pork at the Kepong Baru Wet market last week. I paid around RM12 for it. This time I managed to make the skin crispy and nice. Yum, yum, my family had a taste of nice homemade crispy roast pork over the weekend!
Ingredients
Large slab of pork with skin intact, preferably one with a layer of fat below the skin
Five spice powder, 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Mak Ngar Tong, (wheat sugar) 2 table spoon
Make some deep cuts on the meat part of the pork. Then use a very sharp knife and make some shallow cuts on the skin. Rub five spice powder, salt and mak ngar tong on the meat part of the pork. Pat dry the pork skin and rub some salt on it. Preheat oven to 180 Deg C and roast for one and a half hour or until the skin is crispy. Open the oven door occasionally to let air so that the skin can be crispy. Scrape away any burned part with a sharp knife. Use a large chopping block to cut the roast pork using a large knife to avoid the crispy skins from falling off the meaty part.

Restaurant Yook Tho Yin (PJ) Sdn Bhd, Roast Duck, Roast Pork, Roast Ribs, Char Siew

I picked up my buddy, Chong at the new IBM tower and we had lunch together at Restaurant Yook Tho Yin in Damansara Utama. I have not been back to this restaurant for ages and I only remembered that their roasted food taste quite good. The ‘Si Tau Por’ (LADY BOSS) was busy chopping a roast duck when we walked in. Looks like she did not have enough workers, she has to take our orders and prepared roasted meat as well. Anyway, we ordered a plate of mix roast which consist of roast pork belly, roast pork ribs, char siew and roast duck. For some greens we ordered fried garlic yau mak vegetable (Romaine Lettuce) .
The roast pork was roasted to perfection with crunchy skins and tasted quite good. Both of us like the roast pork ribs very much. It is tender and the sweetness is just nice. The roast duck is quite good also and the skin is crispy which goes along very well with the sweet roast duck sauce. I can really remember the actual taste of the Char Siew but I remember it was ok!
Anyway we also ordered a nice pot of hot Chinese Tik Kuan Yin tea to wash away all the oily stuff from our stomach. Nothing beats a nice hot Chinese tea after a heavy lunch. The total bill for three rice, a plate of mixed roast, vegetable and a pot of Chinese tea came up to be RM25.
Overall it was a nice lunch. The place has air conditioning so we took our time to slowly sip and enjoy the hot tea away from the afternoon heat.

My First Attempt in Preparing Chinese Crispy Roast Pork
My not so crispy Chinese Style Roast Pork!
This is my first attempt to make crispy roast pork. The taste is good but I did not dry the skin long enough, so after roasting the skin was not very crispy. Anyway, I cut out the skin and made sour chap sued soup with it.
Ingredients
Pork Belly with skin, 6”x6”x10”
Marinade
Five Spice powder, 1 table spoon
Nam Yee (Fermented Bean Curd), 1 piece
Pepper, ½ teaspoon
Salt, 1 teaspoon
Sugar, 1 table spoon (You can use Mak Ngar Tong, Maltose)
Shao Shing Chiew, 1 table spoon
Rub the meat side of the pork belly with the marinade. Then leave the pork belly in the fridge overnight to dry the skin. Rub 2 table spoons of salt on the skin before roasting the meat. Roast in preheated oven at 200 Deg C for 30 to 40 minutes.

Wong Kee Pudu Hailam Chicken Rice and Famous Roast Pork, KL
Wong Kee requires no introduction. This place is very famous in KL for its’ roast pork. I had lunch in Wong Kee two weeks ago. There were five of us and we ordered a plate of roast pork and char siew (bbq pork). The roast pork is very tasty, tender and the skin is the crunchiest I ever tasted. No wonder this place is so famous. The Char Siew tasted ok only. They start business at 12.30noon. The total bill for 5 people came out to be RM76.30, pricey but the roast pork is damm good!

Chinese Roast Pork, Chai Leng Park Wet Market, Butterworth

Roast pork stall and a nice piece of roast pork
Roast pork trotters, good for cooking sour vegetable soup!
I will always ‘tar pau’ (take away) the roast pork from this stall. Sometimes I will also bring it back to KL. I have been eating roast pork from this stall for the last 30 years. Ha Ha, this is a very long time. Mom will normally buy roast pork from this stall when we were staying in this neighborhood.
It is roasted to perfection and I love to eat it with ‘Mee Ku’ (Chinese Tortoise Bun).
