These tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants grew from the pulp that I that I used to make tomato juice. I put them in my flower pot as organic fertiliser and without knowing it they started to grow into tomato plants. Unfortunately, the flowers did not bear any tomato and I was forced to destroy the plants when disease started attacking them.
Tomato belongs to the nightshade family of plants. Some of the well known nightshade family are
potato, petunia, aubergine (egg plant) and bell pepper. The nightshade plants contain a range of toxic alkaloids and are poisonous to human. The leaves of tomato, stems and unripe tomato contain a small amount of tomatine which is a toxin but ripe tomato is safe for consumption. The level of tomatine is quite low but the leaves can be toxic for dogs. People with rheumatoid arthritis should avoid eating produce from nightshade family because the solanine inside it can cause pain.
Anyway, there are also lots of good nutrients in tomato like lycopene and are also beneficial in preventing prostate cancer.

I know that tomato has a lot of health values. But somehow, i don't really like the taste. Too bad you had to destroy your tomato plants.
I don't know much about tomatoes aside from eating them. Didn't know the leaves contain toxin. Thanks for sharing.
it is good to plant own vegetables in the garden.. when i retire, i might do that.. i love them more than flowers..

Oh? I love tomato - eaten raw. Used to dislike it...but now have acquired the taste. Prefer the crunchier ones...but I do not have green fingers though. Can't grow anything - have to buy! Tsk! Tsk!
I only love tomatoes with eggs...either stir fried or in soup. Lots here.
Tomato is one of the plant that's really annoying to grow. A lot of fail attempts I had.
But when summer comes, it can be a big joyful thing.
Maybe you need to grow more that 1? So they can fertilise each other.

Never see a tomato plant before. I learn something new today. I buy lots of tomatoes because they are my son's favourite.
tomatoes can put sugar on it and soaked. in the fridge cold cold nice to eat.
i think i'm recommending an unhealthy way to eat fresh tomatoes! haha.
