Ho Heng Kee Seafood at Kedai Kopi (Cafe) Bee Hin, 1, Jln Padang Tembak, Penang, Good Family Restaurant

Ho Heng Kee Seafood serves good authentic local Penang cuisine and reasonably priced family meals. I was back in Penang for my holidays and decided to visit this restaurant again. The chef and owner, Mr. Voon still looking as young as ever, is a real sifu (master) in coming up with new recipes to suit the local Penangites taste buds. Mr. Voon has been cooking up nice dishes in Bee Hin Coffee Shop for more than 10 years and his restaurant is popular among the residents living around the area. It is normal to see many locals stopping by here to ‘tar pau’ (take aways) dishes like tua pan (Penang Wat Tan Hor with wide flat rice noodles), fried noodles, fried rice, dishes to eat with rice... etc, as early as 5pm for dinner. Prices for the dishes start from RM3.50 for fried noodles, rice or tua pan; RM5 for small bowl of soup; RM 8 for a small serving, RM10 or RM12 or RM15 for a medium serving (depending on type of food); RM18 and above for large serving (depending on the type of dish), which I found to be very reasonable.

These are the dishes we ordered for 5 adults and 4 kids:

Mr Voon’s signature dish, Curry Fish Head. This is a Nyonya type of assam fish head. Nice aroma and real tasty. This dish really increases my appetite.

Mr Voon’s another signature dish, Belacan (dried shrimp paste) Chicken Wings. Marinated to perfection, the belacan aroma is just nice and very crispy. This is my son’s favorite dish. My son told me that we must stop by here to have this dish again on our next visit to Penang.

Kam Heong Kepah (a type of shellfish, thicker than lala). I love this dish very much. It has generous amount of sauce and I can taste the dried prawn which is part of the ingredients. The aroma of the sauce in the fresh kepah makes you crave for more. I recommend this dish as a must try!

Tofu with Salted Fish and Minced Pork. The tofu which is homemade by the chef is very smooth and has a very nice texture. Good combination of salted fish and minced pork as the gravy. Thumbs up!

Pork Ribs With Chinese Herbs Soup. This soup comes with generous amount of pork ribs with tender meat. Nice Chinese herb smell, not too strong, just nice. A healthy meal!

Sweet and Sour Pork. We ordered this for the kids. Nicely presented and taste good too!

Fried Eggs with Fresh Prawn. Another dish for the kids.

Ho Heng Kee Seafood is a good place to bring your family for a good and reasonable authentic Penang home cook meal. The traffic along the main road is quite heavy and it is rather easy to miss this restaurant. If you are coming from Penang town centre heading towards Ayer Itam (Penang Hill), make a U turn just before Chung Ling High School and left turn into Jln Padang Tembak (Rifle Range). The restaurant is at the corner of this junction. You can park your car opposite the restaurant at the cafe owner’s house if the gate is open. Otherwise, just park your car by the roadside after turning into Jalan Padang Tembak. Be sure to stop by here on your next visit to Penang, and let me know your feedback. Cheers! levian : Sure, I will add you to my blogroll. Thks

STP : The fried noodles I meant are like Wat Tan Hor not like mamak mee goreng leh, where they add the thick gravy with prawns, vegetables, pork and other stuff. RM3.50 in Penang is very good price lorrr. Belacan chicken is very nice, you should try it.

lcfu : Many places in KL have overpriced food.

kikey : Sorry to get you craving for Penang food again. When will u be back here?
