Jokes|My American Friend Meets Ah Beng and Ah Lian|Shoot The Bird

My American friend, John was at the local coffee shop for his morning breakfast. Ah Beng is the waiter there.

Ah Beng : Gud (good) morning, Jony boy, what to drink arrr?

John : Good morning Ah Beng, give me one coffee and one set of butter toast. Where is Ah Lian? I didn’t see her this morning.

Ah Beng : Oh, Ah Lian, in hospital, eye operate lah!

John : Ohhh, what happen to her eyes?

Ah Beng : You know lah, her eye ahhhh , “shoot the bird”

John : What, her eyes “Shoot the bird” ?????? How to shoot bird with our eyes? MBPJ crows hunter shot her eyes is it?

Ah Beng : No no no! Her eyes, one go here, one go there, like that! Hokkien (Chinese dialect) call it Phak Chiau Bak (Direct translation to English, Shoot The Bird) (Cantonese, Tok Kai Ngan).

John : Oh I get it, in English it is known as squint (Strabismus).

Ah Beng : Oh, “squid”?

John : Ha Ha Ha, never mind Ah Beng, just bring me my coffee!

Youth Ice Hockey Games and Dinner at Mr. Teppanyaki, Sunway Pyramid Mall

I was in Sunway Pyramid last Saturday and manage to watch the ice hockey match between Malaysian Team against Singapore. This event was organized by the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation. The score was neck to neck at first but Singapore began to take the lead towards the end of the game. Nevertheless it was an exciting game and the crowd was cheering loudly. My baby did not like the loud noise, so we have to hop over to Mr. Teppanyaki for our dinner, away from the crowd. He has already fallen asleep by then. Here are some pictures I took on the ice hockey games.

The score board. At first the score was neck to neck but Singapore was leading towards the end! At Mr. Teppanyaki we ordered a Chicken Bento set (RM19.90), Mixed Seafood Set (RM19.90) and a mixed vegetable fried rice. The set came with drinks, miso soup, California rolls and a free gift of ‘magic cup’. The chicken teriyaki from the bento set is nice, not too sweet. I love the teppanyaki fish from the mixed seafood set. Unfortunately the taugeh (bean sprout) is a bit over fried. They should have used crunchy Ipoh taugeh. Miso soup tasted ok. Overall, the food and service is satisfactory. Bruce Lee The Legend Series

I am a great fan of Bruce Lee and have been following The Legend of Bruce Lee series for the last few weeks. I have read a few of Bruce Lee’s book and I was really excited when I came to know that TV8 is showing the series. The main actor Danny Chan Kwok Kuen (of Shaolin Soccer fame) bears a striking resemblance to the late martial art legend, Bruce Lee. Michelle Lang stars as Linda Lee Cadwell. The 50 episode series is produced by China Central Television (CCTV). Bruce’s daughter Shannon Lee is the executive producer. Bruce has good martial skill because he learned all the good moves from many types of martial art and combined all of it together to create a new martial art, which he named it as Jeet Kune Do. Fried Crispy Taugeh (Bean sprout) Recipe

I always cook this dish whenever I have leftover taugeh. Fried crispy taugeh is easy to prepare and tasty too. Ingredients Flour, ¼ bowl Rice Flour, ¼ bowl Water, 1 bowl Taugeh, ½ bowl Egg, 1 pc Prawn meat, 100gms, cut into large chunks Salt to taste Mix well all the ingredients. Heat up oil for frying in wok. Use a large spoon to scoop up the mixture and deep fry it in the oil. Taste good with chili sauce!

Bubur Gandum Gula Melaka (Wheat porridge with palm sugar) - Vegetarian

Early traces of Gandum (wheat, botany name Triticum spp.) cultivation were found in Turkey, Syria and Jordan. Today , wheat is the second most cultivated plant after corn. I cooked this sweet dessert during the weekend using Gula Melaka as the sweetener and it turns our real nice. Here is the recipe for Bubur Gandum Gula Melaka, tong sui (Wheat porridge with palm sugar).

Ingredients
Gandum (Wheat), 225gms
Santan (Coconut milk), from one coconut
Palm sugar, 2”x2”x3”, dilute in hot water and sieved
Water, 5 bowls
Pandan Leaves (Screw pine), 5 pcs
A dash of salt

Wash gandum and boil it in 5 bowls of water with pandan leaves until soft.
Add palm sugar and santan. Stir the mixture and bring to a boil. Add dash of salt. Your sweet dessert is ready! (You can add white sugar if the gandum is not sweet enough for you)

Preparing my Daughter for RLC Champs Concert

After 3 days of RLC camp, it was the concert night. My wife was late from work and I have to get my daughter prepared for the concert. Ohh gosh, I have to get our all my wife’s make up stuff and try to apply them on my daughter. First, apply nail varnish on my daughter’s nails. Not easy, hand shaking. Fortunately, I was able to get it on evenly on her nails. Second, apply foundation powder on her face. This one is easy! Third, apply red colour blush on her cheek. No problem! Forth, apply eye shadow. We were arguing what colour to use. Finally I managed to convince her to settle for purple and pink, which match the clothes she was wearing. Fifth, my daughter managed to apply lipsticks on her own. She must have been playing with her mum’s lipsticks! Then, when we have finished, my wife reached home. What a good timing! The LDP (Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong) Highway traffic was rather heavy and we manage to arrive 10 minutes before the concert starts.

Ban Chien Kueh (Chinese Pancakes with Ground Peanuts, sugar and Margarine)

One wok of Ban Chien Kuih, cut into 6 pcs. Only 5 pcs left when I took this picture because my daughter already ate one piece.
There are many versions of Ban Chien Kueh (Penang Hokkien name). One of my favourite stall is located in Kepong Baru Morning Wet Market. The owner of the stall cooks around 5 woks of ban chien kueh at one go and it takes a great skill to make sure all are cooked well. Her daughter will take order and cut the Ban Chien Kueh for customers. I buy the BCK from this stall because it comes with a generous amount of ground peanuts and the taste is good. A wok cost RM3.20. There are two types available; thin crispy crusts or thick non crispy crust. I normally buy the latter. Location of the Ban Chien Kueh Stall (Chinese Pancakes)

Simple Chicken Kurma Recipe – Halal

Prepacked kurma curry powder is available off the shelf and I normally use Adabi brand for my chicken kurma. It is quite easy to cook kurma and here is the simple recipe: - Ingredients Kurma Curry powder, 25gms, add water and make into paste Chicken, 500gms, cut into large chunks Onions, 2pcs, cut into four Cinnamon stick, 1 pcs Serai (lemongrass), 2 pcs, bashed Tomato, 2pcs, cut into four Carrots, 1 pc, cut into cubes Potato, 2 large pcs, cut into large chucks Dried chillies, 3pcs (optional) Dark soya sauce, ½ teaspoon Salt to taste Water, 1 bowl Vegetable oil, 3 table spoons Sauteed onions and serai in 3 table spoons of oil until fragrant. Add cinnamon stick and dried chillies. Stri fry for a while. Add kurma curry paste and fry the mixture until fragrant. Then add chicken and potato. Add 1 bowl of water and boil over slow fire until the potato turn soft. Add tomato, carrot, dark soya sauce and salt to taste.

Tuck Kee Dim Sum, Jln Burung Jentayu, Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong

Tuck Kee has two separate sections; one of it is an air conditioned restaurant and a makeshift stall outside that serve dim sum. I normally go to Tuck Kei for my midnight snacks......or shall I say early morning snacks. The dim sum starts from 6am to 3am in the morning. The porridge is real yummy but unfortunately I forgot to take its pictures. They have many tasty dim sum; my favourites being the porridge, chicken feet, fried chun kin (like lobak but with prawn meat), siew mai and wu kok. There are lots of ingredients in the porridge like dried mussels, scallops, century eggs and chicken meat. Tuck Kei porridge and chun kin are in my highly recommended list if you were to visit this restaurant. The total bill for 7 types of dim sum and tea came out to be RM29.30.

Chicken Bak Hu Recipe (Chicken Meat Floss)

My kids love to eat Bak Hu (Meat Floss) with porridge. It can also be used as a main filling for sandwiches. I normally make bak hu from chicken meat. However if you can get hold of wild boar meat, it is even better because wild boar are full of lean meat.

Ingredients
Chicken meat, de boned, 1 kg
Light Soya Sauce, 7 table spoons
Dark Soya Sauce, 1 teaspoon (optional)
Sugar, 4 table spoons
Salt to taste
Water 2 bowls

Boil 2 bowls of water and put in all the other ingredients. Cook over slow fire until the water is almost all dried up. Transfer the content in the pot over to a wok. Stir fry the chicken in slow fire until it breaks into small strands and all dried up.

Three of my Favourite Hawker Stalls at Great Wellesley Food Court, Taman Chai Leng, Prai

This food court is located at the former Chai Leng Park Great Wellesley cinema. It is actually an extension of the cinema building. The three stalls that serve my favourite food are the curry mee, tua pan (wat tan hor in Cantonese, braised fried kueh teow) and char kueh teow. I ‘tar pau’ these for my late night supper when I was back in Butterworth recently. Curry Mee I have been eating the curry mee from this stall for the last 28 years. The owner of the stall has since passed away and his wife took over the business. I have acquired the taste of the curry mee from this stall and it is a must have whenever I go back to Butterworth! It is the best I had so far!

Tua Pan This is hor fun Cantonese style and in Penang we call it tua pan because the kueh teow that we used are wider than the normal hor fun. The tua pan in Penang is real tasty because the hor fun is fried to perfection in hot iron wok and the starchy soup is yummy

Tai Thong Imperial China, Jaya Square, Subang Jaya Restaurant

I was having dinner in Tai Thong Imperial China Restaurant during the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony. It was my wife’s nephew graduation day and we had a sumptuous 8 course dinner there. It was great to be able to watch the historical event on the big screen TV. One thing I like about Tai Thong group of restaurant is the quality of food they serve. These are the dishes that we had.
Cold Dish, nice squid................................................Shark fin, yummy.................nice.
Roast Duck... but cannot beat Sunrise's one.......Prawn with Tung Fan.......sweet natural taste! Baby Pak Choi with crispy cuttlefish....good!..........Fresh steamed patin, smooth flesh.... Fried rice.......tummy already full......

Beh Teh Soh (Roti Gula Putih, Hiong Piah, White Sugar Biscuit)

This type of biscuit is known as Beh Teh Soh in Penang. The outer layer of the biscuit is crispy and the filling is made from sweet molasses. The main ingredients are wheat flour, white sugar, wheat molasses, salt, vegetable oil, sesame seed and shallots. I love to eat Beh Teh Soh as my tea time snack. It goes down well with Pu Err tea.

These Beh Teh Soh are from Butterworth. They are priced at RM3.80 for 10 pieces.

These Hiong Piah are from Perak, Yee Hup. Very crispy and contains less sugar inside. I love the taste!

Nice packaging but pricey, around RM1 per piece sold in a packet of 10s.
